My 282 in my 660 starts right up even when cold but has a ton of white smoke for the first 10-15 minutes of running but then clears up, I am wondering why? Also would a D310 or D312 head work on my 282? Thanks.

Common issue with that engine, especially if it's getting tired with lower compression. Valve and seat wear will cause the compression to drop as the valves seat lower over time. On my 560 I had all new seats installed in the head and purposely set all the valves after machining to .005-.010 inch above the head deck surface. With the late IH 7.3 glow plugs it now starts fine after 15 seconds heat time, and no white smoke.

Almost all of them at some point in time will do that. Diesel tech has told you one of the problems but the head itself is also prone to crack. As it heats up the crack seals and the white smoke clears. Neither of the other heads will work. Also be aware if you tear it down there are two different head gaskets for that engine. You have to get the right head gasket for the sleeves your engine has.
