IH 240 power steering

Greetings, I have a 1956 IH 240 utility tractor and the rotary valve (power steering) leaks like crazy and so far I can't seam to stop the leak. Can this unit be removed and the steering work without the Power steering or is it best to try and get the leak fixed??

I don't know about converting it to manual steering, sounds very doubtful though.

I have replaced the seals and orings in a steering valve though.

If you can't get repair parts, chances are the seals and rings can be bought off the shelf. Some mfgs don't support repair, only replacement, and they are expensive.

But a word of caution! If you take it apart, take lots of pictures, mark EVERYTHING, make notes as it comes apart. It will go back more than one way, but will only work when correct. Can be VERY aggravating!

I have an IH 240. I assume your leak is at the input and output shafts.Replace the orings with "quad" orings. There are like 4 orings fussed together.
Most oring supplers should have them. Or check with Force America.com
Also used them on my Case 630 power steering unit.

Is this the power steering with the torque generator in the steering column, or something else?

If it's the steering column type, all you need is the steering column from a manual steer tractor, and maybe one or two shafts. Since you'd be taking it off a parts tractor most likely, may as well grab the whole shaft from the front end back.

Greetings, Thanks for the info. I've had it apart so many times that I do it in my sleep. I'll try the seals before going manual.
Thanks,

Yup. It's got the rotary valve assembly in the steering Column just under the steering wheel. I'll try seals first . Thanks,
