red barn paint

My metal barn, 45 x 40 and my shop, wood siding 38 x 43 (with lean-to additions) are 45 and 40 years old. barn is faded and paint is see through thin in places. What is a good red barn paint? I do not like how a few barns around here have faded. I am considering Home Depot's Behr red barn paint? The price is reasonable. On the metal barn, I could use a oil or a latex base paint? I am getting the impression that newer latex or water based paints are adequate. on the shop, currently gray-brown, I am considering going red, but it already has water based paint on it.

Sounds like you have z mix of problems to cover. May not be one paint that will cover all. I have not been thrilled with latex water based paints for exterior use. Donno how well oil based paints will cover and hold up over old water based stuff. Some serious things need be considered here. Consult some professional paint exxperts.

I've been told that you can use oil based paint to paint over old latex, but you can't paint over oil based paint with latex.

Behr is usually good paint, but check out what Lowes sells also. Can't remember the name but we bought our house paint at Lowes 16 years ago to paint our old house and it still looks good!.

Bill,

Check out Sherwin-Williams. They supply a lot of professional painters. Red tends to fade over time. Observe old red pickups and business signs with red on them. I do not work for S-W.

speaking from experience; the oil based barn paint works great if it hasn't been painted with a latex. I let sherwinwilliams talk me into latex paint on one roof and it's the worse disaster ever. If you have bad rust, you will need to paint it one year and again the next with barn paint because it takes a yr to dry. then that paint will last 15-20yrs. spraying 5gallon of barn paint, thinned 50%. means 10gallon of spray and it can be sprayed in an hour. then cleanup; so don't let someone pull a fast one by telling you a big price.

Bill,
I'm no paint expert, but I do observe paint failures on many metal buildings in the country. I would be going to a paint store and getting their advice. We used to have a sherwin williams store in town. I went there to buy paint for galvanized metal. They sold me a good primer and paint and it worked well.

My biggest concern is mold. I've noticed mold growing on metal buildings that have been re painted. So I would seek professional help and find out if there is something to put in the paint to stop mold.

I have to power wash vinyl siding annually and it's a Big pain in the ankle. BPIA.

I own homes with aluminum siding and haven't had to do anything to siding in 40 years.

I've noticed the new barn siding is very shinny and no mold. Get ahead of any potential mold issues. Seek professional help.

Barn paint is garbage. You may as well drop your trousers, and you-know-what all over the barn for the good it'll do.

Dad thought barn paint would be a good convenient alternative to paint the house because it came in 5 gallon buckets. The stuff is like water. Looks good in the bucket but when you paint it on it is see-through. You'd need about 30 coats to make a difference.
