3208 Cat engine

The 3208 in my excavator died and can not get it to start. It has started very well in the past. I ran it out of fuel, fill the tank and primed it, took a little while to get running and then run fine for about 3 hours. Then just stopped, has fuel to the pump but does not fire. I have power to the solenoid on the injector pump, but before this problem I could hear a click when I turned the switch on, now I do not hear the click. Is the solenoid the problem??? Any thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks

If I remember right, you can unbolt the solenoid and try to start it.If it starts, since you had power to the solenoid,it is bad.BUT,you have to be able to stall it somehow to shut it down.Mark

I had a solenoid on one fail where it went through the silicone and into the unit itself. The wire must have been wiggled back and forth by the fan clutch kicking in and out blowing the wire around and eventually broke all of the strands of copper. I made it work for a while by soldering it and put on a new one when harvest was over.

Pull the solenoid off, see what's behind it. There may be some linkage that has come loose or is broken.

Probably be obvious once you get in there.

You say there is power to the solenoid. The best way to check it is to unhook the wire, turn on the ignition, and then touch the wore to the terminal on the solenoid. If you don't physically hear, or feel it click on, the solenoid is bad.

As another reply suggested, if you need to use the machine, you should be able to take the solenoid off, remove the plunger, and reinstall the solenoid back onto the pump. This will allow the engine to start, but you'll either have to stall it, or run it out of fuel, to shut it back off.

Check for power to the shut off WHILE you are cranking. Had one with a bad relay that would drop power off while cranking. This one on a different machine ,but can be a problem on anything.

You can remove the two mounting bolts for the solenoid and lean the solenoid over and remove the plunger and spring. Rebolt solenoid and
try to start engine. If it starts you have a bad solenoid. You will have to stall the engine to shut it down. The 3208 also had issues
with throttle shaft seals sucking air, not a hard problem to fix. Cat makes a bushing for housing that has throttle shaft in it.
Hope this helps.

You can pull the solenoid out and reach in/press the lever to cut it off. I believe you can plug the hole with a rag or something like a plastic plug as there's no pressure there if my memory serves me correctly.
