Follow up to 27HP Kohler oil leak

I found the problem.

There was a drain plug under the starter that came loose, main seal looks fine and no holes in block. I ended up pulling the engine out to find it, there is a real mess there, so I am going to clean up all the oil before I put the engine back in. This is a 6 year old unit with 200 hours.

I doubt if it's dirty up there, but clean the fins out good under the shroud. I'll put two 200 hours on a kohler in an exmark or toro in 3 months! Reminds me of a buddy, he needed a 60" Z, I needed two, so I got a good deal on three and he got one of them. His has 260 hours on it. Mine ended up with over 3000, think one is still around and parted the other one out it was so worn!

David,
That could have cost you an engine. Sounds like you got lucky.

The other day I had to buy a mower part. I noticed the new mowers came with either a Kohler or a Kawasaki. Kawasaki added about $300 to the price.

I have two Kaw and two Kohler engines. Both have been good engines, but I think I would pay the additional $300 as long as the kaw had a carb. Buying parts for Kaw EFI is pricey. I like Keeping It Simple enough for me to repair, KISS.

The other day I noticed the pump on my old pressure dripping oil. I thought I was going to need a new pump. Turns out the sight glass on side of pump vibrated loose. Decided it was time to change oil before filling the pump. Good thing, oil had a lot of particles in it.
