JD 820 Two Cylinder Black Dash

When I bought my 820 it had sat outside for 2 or 3 years uncovered. I drained the oil pan and there was a good pint or so water came out so not sure if it came down the pipe or from an internal leak. Ive left the drain plug and oil filter out and now filled the radiator with some coloured water and placed some clean paper below both. Im guessing if its an internal leak then it will show up with the coloured water if it came down the pipe then it should be dry.
Now how do I get as much of the oily water out of the engine? is there any other covers or drain plugs that can be removed to aid cleaning? I see there is a plate just forward of the oil filter housing, can this be removed to aid the cleaning?
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

This is one of those times where the illustrations and images in the operator's manual pay thier way. Dozens of pages of info from the JD manual are clearer than a paragraph on the internet.
Black Dash 820's are a particulary desirable tractor.

Signifies more hp. 820s were initially just 80s with bigger fenders and a few small upgrades. Both used the same engine and hp and a green dash. Midway through production JD upped the hp on the 820 and painted the dash black. So blackdash 820s have the same hp as the 830 and green dash 820s have the same hp as the 80.

To be fair the best I can access here in Scotland is an IT manual and this is a very rare tractor here unlike the US and Canada where you guys seems to have lots. In my experience there is a huge wealth of knowledege here on this site and most people offer their knowledge and experience whenever they can, Ive had help with many US tractor issues.I do however appreciate your suggestion.

Green dash models are considered 1957 models and black dash are 1958's I know that isn't exactly what some serial number lists say. That is what John Deere considered them. Most serial number lists actually list the year they were manufactured. The 20 series tractors that were manufactured in late 1956 were sold as 1957 models. Except 420's, seems when ever you say something about old John Deere's there is an exception.

If you are in a humid area, a pint of water in the crankcase could be from condensation.

The plate in front of the drain is really the oil pump, pulling that cover won't gain you any access. If it was sitting out that long it was probably condensation or rain water. The water would concentrate on the bottom, so you likely just got it all out. I wouldn't be afraid to fill it back up with oil and run it, of course, checking the fluid levels closely for a while afterward.

If you wanted to reassure yourself you could always fill it with diesel and drain that, but it's up to you.
