OT- 2 cycle engine

I have a 9.9 Suzuki outboard that is oil injected, is there any reason I can't take the oil tank off and plug the line then just mix my gas and oil ?????

Why would you want to do that? It probably had variable ratio oiling, which worked great on the Evinrude we had. Is there something wrong with it?

As long as the oil injection is working it's great. When it quits you're in trouble soon thereafter.Yes you can remove the oil res.,plug the inlet fitting and add oil to the gasoline at 50:1.I've done it with snow mobiles.I don't know if it's true but I've heard that if the oil pump or the mixing valve fails the system defaults to a constant value.Thats fine but if the supply line plugs or is damaged all the defaults in the world won't save your engine.

I don't know about your Suzuki but I do know this. Some two-stroke-cycle engines with oil-injection can burn up a main-bearing if run without the pump and an oil-mix instead. I know of several Kawasakis that came with that warning.

works ok just leaks from tank when you tilt to trailer or remove and lay down. I have to take a baster and suck the oil out to transport then fill with oil to run....

Check your manual. A known issue from the early injection days- Yamaha had the oil injection at intake manifold- was a cheap way to use existing 'premix' engine, just add the variable injection pump and tank, line to intake area. The Suzis I rode had a different system, they had direct injection of oil to a main bearing and that oil went to connecting rod, other main bearing got tranny oil and cylinder had oil line also. Some oil mist to bottom of piston, ring area, wrist pin. Yamaha worked, was cheaper used more oil- Suzi and Kaws used less oil, met emission standards but had about half way to 4 stroke in crankshaft, machining for oil channels. Racing use was wire oil pump full open on Suzi, no premix- if in emergency say broken oil pump premix could be used 25 to 32:1 but only to 1/2 throttle for short time- crankshaft bearing at risk. A guess- outboard engine has one main bearing part sealed for the direct oil injection that also does connecting rod, other main bearing is a ball thrust bearing with open to inside crankcase getting some splash and mist from the oil that first did the main bearing, connecting rod big end. Vertical crank, the open bearing is at bottom to get trickles of oil. Premix will lead to upper crankshaft bearing failure followed by connecting rod bearing close second. Some later Lawnboys had this pattern crankshaft injection- Suzi patents expired or nominal license. First series didn't have the low oil ignition ground for empty oil tanks- rods went through sides when run low on oil- even with premix. RN

I'd check with the local Suzuki dealer, like RN mentioned, Suzuki had CCI oil injection. Crank Case Injection to the crank bearings.

My DT-1B Yamaha wiped out most of the motor when the oil pump drive gears wiped off the teeth. I never could figure out why it did that, but on another forum somebody said a bit of dirt or rust coming down from the oil tank could jam the pump....

I've got a 2-stroke dirt bike with the oil injection system (into the manifold only). I wonder what would be the effect on the pump if it weren't pumping oil ??? Maybe self destruct ???

Probably a complete rebuild; new piston, maybe rebore cylinder, rebuild crank and rod, replace crank main bearings.

All the lubed parts get seriously maimed....

Reminds me of a problem a friend of mine had.Brand new O/B,175 or 200 HP,less than 50 hrs. on it.On the way in from a day of fishing in the plumb gut, Gardeners Island area of eastern long island,N.Y.Began to lose power and had to call Sea Tow.Get to the marina and everybody wants to know whats wrong. He tells them -lost power, engine seized.Mechs all say you must have run dry of oil.B.S. he says, check the oil tank, nearly full.Powerhead replaced under warrantee. All oil injection gear removed and/or caped and plugged.
