Re broken bolt in aluminum

Thought I would post back to thank everyone for there solutions, and let you know I did get it out by drilling it and picking the pieces out. I found a large center punch that just fit the hole to get started, I drilled a 1/4 inch hole first, it drilled easy enough, figured I didn't have anything to loose because I was going to have to tow the car ten miles to a welder. I tried a screw type ease out first, couldn't find the squared one I was looking for, but no go, so I drilled with a bigger bit, it got off a little because the ease out had mangled the end of the bolt, I may have lost some thread, but it held the bolt tight. Wish I had seen the alum trick first! That looked doable.

Do yourself a big favor and pick up a GOOD set of left hand drill bits. A lot of times as you are drilling a hole those bits will unscrew the stuck bolt. Give them a shot.

I have used the left hand bits before, and they do work sometimes when they catch, in this application I had to use a extra long bit to get a straight shot at it, and there was no finding one around here.

I am a believer in left handed bits too. I had three sheared off bolts. I had worked at one for awhile but I was not making much progress. I went to the fastener store to pick up drills, taps and heli-coils, and the guy told me "here you want this" and he handed me a left handed drill bit. I drilled holes in th bolts and they turned out easily with an extractor.

And JDV, they do not need to catch to work.
