Big Tree Down

I really hated to do it to a healthy spruce tree but this one had grown so big and so close to the house that I decided it had to go. I guess we never imagined just how big it would grow when it was planted over 30 years ago. It had to be about 40 feet tall and the diameter six feet above the ground where I cut through was nearly the length of my 16 inch Poulan. And it was quite a drag for the old Massey to pull away. Video to follow.

Don't blame you a bit for cutting it. You can never control where Mother Nature would take it down.

We're fortunate that the previous owners here planted their Spruce's far enough away. However, I need to take down an old Oak and a VERY mature Quaking Aspen. The Aspen is no more than 4' away from the house. Every time we get a wind storm, I'm holding my breath.

Well, having your Spruce out of there will allow for better air flow around your house. Beautiful place!

I had a similar problem, blue spruce planted too close to house. Started rubbing against the shingles. It was only 20 ft tall. I backed my 6x10 ft dump trailer close to tree. Used generator in back of truck and my 4 hp electric chain saw to remove about 6 ft of lower branches and put in trailer before I dropped the tree in trailer. Perfect landing. Strapped tree in trailer and hauled it to fire pit.

Only took me about 30 minutes start to finish.

As for trees, I've learned my lesson. Sooner or later, they will get too big and fall on buildings.

I had over 20 trees removed so after a 90 mph straight line wind, I won't find them on a house or garage. A wind damaged two houses and 3 garages because of trees falling on them. One tree put 9 skylights in one place. A branch went into the dining room, broke a truss.

I like the shade, but hate the mess and damage trees will cause.

We only have a few Spruces, and fortunately they're far enough away to stay, but just barely!

Saw a video not too long ago on Youtube. Showed a guy cutting this HUGE stump - must've been about 5'+ diameter and about 9' or 10' tall. He had his Ford pickup nearby, and soon I would understand why. He planned on felling the stump into the bed of his truck without having to load it by hand. Well, it finally did come down, and it actually went into his truck bed...for the most part. In the process, it broke an axle, nearly took out the driver side of the truck bed, then the truck and log started rolling into another car.

....I "DO" hope he wasn't a YT member! *LOL*

(quoted from post at 01:05:50 04/08/17) That's a big tree, what type of tree is it that it grew that big?
Either Blue or Colorado spruce I think. There are many of them here my dad planted , some close to 50 years old.
And gtractorfan, that Super 90 works just great with the front end loader. For the past 20 years it has been my year round work horse around the farm. It lifts every round bale on the farm, hauls tons of gravel, and I use it to clean out the cattle shelter every year. It would be nice to have working brakes some day but I've adapted to living without them.

I had a maple that was 4.5 ft at the base with a split in the middle. I hired a local tree guy to take it down, because some limbs were over the house and some over the utility wires going down the road. I expected the guy to come with his crane but he brought just his bucket truck. Pretty soon the limbs were just raining down, and thy all fell where he wanted them to. Two hours and he was gone.

Planted some trees in the early 80's they unfortunately became in the road and my renter took them out one took an hour and a half the d 6 had a job that day . not bad for a thirty year old popular.

I was considering calling in help on this one but then I figured out a method that I was pretty sure would work with no collateral damage. It worked and took less than an hour. Clean up of needles, cones, broken branches, etc. took longer than getting the tree down.

The Blue Spruce and the Colorado Spruce are the same tree but are referred to by different names.............Kinda like puma and cougar. :)
