Couple quick questions. So I picked up a massey ferguson 35 diesel tractor. It was burning antifreeze, so I thought it was the head gasket, so I took the head off, took it to the machine shop and the said it was cracked. So I bought a brand new head.... my question is what could have caused this? I'm thinking there was a cooling problem? Or out of some circumstances can a head just Crack over time? Tractor has 2900 hours. So I'm thinking should I replace the water pump? Or just put it all back together and see how the temperature operates on the Guage? I bought it to his way so I have no idea how the cooling system was before? I just don't want the head to Crack again. Again thanks for the help, this site has a lot of good information.

cooling them down good after working hard is the fastest way to crack them. Let them cool for a few minutes before shut down. Also ether can do it starting.

Well, whenever you're in that deep,go ahead and replace the thermostat. It's already apart. After warmup double check the temp gauge by using an infra red thermometer.Mark
