Crank grinding

I saw the post about tapered rod bearing shims. I never used them, but I have heard of them years ago. One of a few things that were done years ago, that aren't done anymore. Has any one heard of grinding a crank rod bearing surface, while the crank was still in the car? I found it hard to believe , but I seen it done on a chevy 6. Some how the machine was mounted to the rear wheel to turn the motor. A grinder was hooked to the crank with a small stone to grind the crank to size as the crank slowly turned. Believe it or not. Do you remember anything that was done years ago that isn't practiced now, on motors. stan

When I worked for Cummins Diesel in KCMO in 1968, I saw this done. The owner of the truck could not afford the teardown to grind the whole crank, so a guy came in and ground the rod journal in the block. He had a setup where he could turn the crank and grind the rod journal all at the same time. I've not seen that done since. At the time, I thought that was pretty neat.

Seen done on slant 6 mopar . Had electric motor that was belted up to turn crank. He would grind a bit measure then grind somemore till got rite size
.

Saw it done once on a big Cummins Diesel also. They had a motor that went into the starter hole.

1949 NAPA came to my shop and ground the rods in a chev 2 ton truck ,,without removing the engine. I do not remember anything about turning the rear wheels but the engine was rotated slowly some way.

Worked with an old guy 40 years ago that said it was common back in the 1940s. He used that idea to use a connecting rod and sand paper to grind one in his back yard in the early 1960s.

Today I know companies will grind/repair crankshaft that way in large compressor station engines. One company Reynolds French.

And to answer your question. On newer engines is ther a use for.a timing light anymore? I was wondering about this yesterday.

Watched it done on a Mack truck diesel about 20 years ago. The fellow that did it still has the setup to do it but has pretty much retired.

There were 2 manufactures of portable crankshaft grinders, Winona, later Winona Van Norman & Sunnen. I learned how to operate the Winona. The Winona had a rear wheel drive used with a std. transmission & a cable drive that that went into the flywheel after you removed the starter. Those of you that would like to see a picture of Winona go to EBAY and look for a Winona Portable Crankshaft grinder ,under business industrial there is the rear wheel drive & several grinders red box, side pictures to click on.

HAROLD BURGESS FROM BYRON CENTER DID CRANK GRINDING IN CARS WITH THE CRANKSHAFT STILL IN BLOCK HE HAD A OLD CHEVY STEP VAN THAT HE WENT TO CAR LOT AND SUCH AND PROVIDED THESE SERVICES LAST I KNEW HE WAS STILL WORKING ON OLD CAR ENGINES

I went to the ebay post but all I could see was what looked like the tire rotator. I have done
a couple of small engines using the rod and valve grinding compound.
