Grease zerk caps?

Do they make a cap that you can use to cover a grease zerk to
keep the dirt away? I spend more time cleaning the dirt off zerk
than I do greasing. Sometimes after using a rag to wipe dirt off,
I have to use air compressor to get all the dirt off or zerk
won't take grease, it just squirts out the side. BYW, I
discovered another use for orphan socks. I use the sock like
glove to wipe off the dirt/grease. Keeps the grease off me, pitch
the sock when done.

They do. When I was working they used them on the grease zerts before painting the machines. But they bought them in a box of 1000 at a time

The ones I use are called Lubricaps and are made of a special petroleum resistant rubbber. One set I've had on for 15 years and they are still nice and soft, not hard or cracking. I get them from a place called Aircraft Spruce and they cost under .50 cents ea. The cost to me is worth it because I hate the plastic type.

By the time you wipe off the cover to get to the fitting then wipe it off you will be all day just to grease one machine.
Sounds like either your tips are shot, or the fittings have some damage to them. I don't have all that trouble with greasing the combine, and those are nothing but dirt and chaff.

Do have the gun end that snaps on the zerk and holds itself? Besides cleaning the junk off the zerk, the worst part for me is being in an awkward position trying the hold the gun tip on tight to the zerk. Now it's easy.

I learned a useful fact when I ran the grease truck for a mining company. if you have a grease fitting that is worn and the grease gun chuck doesn't want to seal so the grease goes in instead of to the side. Put a rag on the fitting and then press the gun onto it and it will seal till you get time to change the fitting.

Thanks to everyone. I learned something new today, grease dust caps do exist.
I ordered 100 rubber ones for $19. They look like they grip the zerk better than the plastic ones. Thanks again for your input. geo.

IVAN - THE grease ZERK was designed by Oscar ZERK back in January 1929 for The Alemite company. A Zirt is a urination of short duration. A Zert has something to do with Sicko's obsessed with undead people.
