If Atlanta's traffic was bad enough

Now a bridge collapses after fire.

I avoid Atlanta by going to Florida via Alabama.

Not sure where fire is, but it sounds like it going to make
things worse.
bridge fire

Just an idea I had after hearing about this.
All I-** roads near a major city should be limited access only....let the inner citys find there own way around.
Concrete jungles are worse than any grown up brushy areas we have around here.
Hard to believe a load of PVC pipe could cause a bridge to collapse.
It's a wake up call to get out of the city, who needs it?

rom what I saw in an article this morning there was a large amount of pvc pipe stored under the overpass. This was much more than just a truck load of pipe. The mystery is how it caught fire in the first place.

I have just finished reading FREEDOM'S FORGE about how private industry won WW II for us. If that bridge had collapsed during the war and it was stopping war materials from getting through I think they would have brought in steel beams, plates and a few welders and it would have been back in place in a day or two. Oh, FREEDOM'S FORGE is definitely worth the read.

Please JD, do not encourage those city people to move out of their hives into the country. Do you realize what a damper that would put on the lives of us country folks?

I do agree with you in that cities should not be allowed to use the interstate highways to funnel local traffic around to avoid building better streets. The interstate highways were built to allow cross country driving without going through the cities. Try driving on I79 [?]? through Columbus or Cincinnati Ohio for example.

Bybasses 294 290 190 are supposed to go around the city but all go through the city now in Chicago. You don't want to drive across the city at anytime but 3 am, and then you may get shot. chitty dweller as little as possible, but my wife well, you know. Earl

wasn't one load of plastic pipe- article notes 'area of construction materials, supplies, parking of equipment. Likely timber forms, oil/diesel tanks, tar, and maybe couple utility cranes- tuck away under bridge area, quick fence put up to keep out some thieves and crowd various things together- think of it as a aircraft hangar turned short term storage. Or over grown farm shop with tar for roofing project next to diesel tank and tractor pulling wagon with full load of hay bales- and missing the 'no smoking' sign.

I looked at Google maps. A lot of backed up traffic.
My boy is planning to go through Alanta on his return trip. Bet he isn't looking forward to it.

Agree. Just think of how many ships, subs, planes, tanks, jeeps, trucks and ordnance were produced by this country from pretty much a standing start in December of 1941 through early 1945. Even built an A-bomb from scratch. All in just over three years. Today they'd still be arguing over the affirmative action clauses in the defense contracts and how to make sure all the fighting units were "diverse".
