I have a 1973 d7f dozer that whenever I turn the ignition switch on it trips the circuit breaker on the dash. I checked the voltage at circuit breaker and there's negative 24 volts. Help me please

Sounds like something is shorted.

Look for the obvious first, mouse chewed wiring, pinched wire, wire against the exhaust, etc.

If nothing, start disconnecting accessories on the ignition switch circuit. A wiring diagram will help. Start at the switch, do the easy ones first, disconnect a wire, try the switch. If the problem is still there, reconnect that one, go to the next.

It's a process of elimination. One thing you might be able to do, feel the wires for heat. Once the circuit has been reset a few times, the shorted wire will begin to get warm.

You have a short and almost all the wiring that would cause that is right there behind the dash. Nothing complicated about the dash wiring on a D7. As the others said look for a bare wire usually around the lower part of the dash board. SOMETIMES those breakers just get weak with age.

unhook the glow plugs and try it see if it still does it if it starts you have shorted glow plug or glow plug harness when you turn to start it powers the glow plugs for just a split second if it still does it unhook alt and try it the alt can short out and cause same problem but most of time it is the glow plugs if I remember correct that could cause that but it has been a while
