Firewood Today

We got together our traditional crew to cut up poplar logs into stove length this afternoon. It has become a yearly tradition and some of the videos are on youtube. We are a little late this year compared to some. Nice to have dry wood not covered in snow like some years. The 67 old Wisconsin V4 performed like a trooper powering the saw blade through some good sized logs. We didn't finish but there is always another weekend. My back was ready for a rest anyway. I might get a little up to date video posted on youtube.

Well you might say poplar is popular here. :) Mainly because that is what grows here. Its my brothers wood supply as I don't burn anymore. The airtight stove they have is pretty economical on wood compared to the old days of wood cookstoves that sent a lot of heat up the chimney.

My mistake, maybe it was the spell check! I like it for quick heat, it is considered a hardwood, lol

"My mistake, maybe it was the spell check!"

Please explain???? Rusty6 never mentioned 'Popular' in his post. BTW, 'spell check' only suggests corrections for YOUR typing mistakes. Not the poster.

I'm using a iPhone, it has spell check that works automatically, it changes the words, if you don't go back and reread what you typed. it also put posters pics the right way if they post upside down, I know what rusty 6 posted. I know what kind of wood he is talkin about. Don't have a cow man.

Greg - Depends on what you have your PC set for. Some people have it set to make suggested spellings, some for nothing at all, and some have it set to make corrections automatically.

Rusty6 never spelled 'Popular' in his post. You were the one to make a reference to the word 'popular' instead of "Poplar". Rusty6 is correct and you are wrong.

BTW, it is mot your IPhone fault.

So, how many types of trees do you know that are named "Popular"?

I was simply replying to your post. Not trying to make an argument here.

Whether auto-correct was engaged or it was an honest typo really doesn't matter. I see posts all the time that have poor spelling. As someone here mentioned, they are using an iphone. Beats the heck out of me how they can use those things as my fat fingers have a hard enough time on a full-size keyboard! *LOL*

Honestly Greg, not trying to pick o fights here. Was just a simple reply.

It dosent matter what rusty6 typed, I typed poplar,
and my phone changed it to popular, really that
simply, I dident go back and reread my post before I
posted it and see the mistake or change, I don't
know what the big deal is, but this guy has issues.
Mommy, daddy ect...

Funny how things go the part of the country that needs a good firewood the most grows some of the worst wood and here in VA we just let wood like Poplar and Maple rot because its not even close to being as good as Oak,Black Locust,Walnut and Hickory which is everywhere.

Dang, reminds me of English class in here.

Can we just call it popple instead? (by the way, spell check wanted to use popper)

Poplar, popular, popple, call it what you want the trees we are talking about may well be aspen.

Have you ever tried to put a nail in a poplar board that was cured really well. Nigh impossible without splitting the board or bending the nail. We take beaver trimmed and cured trees sometimes and use for baseball bats as kids. Never broke one, we did leave the handle thicker than a normal
Bat just for safety sake

Hey Jon in La,

There's a good video on Youtube describing the technical aspect of tree classification. Basically if it's seeds are incased in fruit or a pod then hard wood, if the seeds just drop off the tree (considered bare or naked) then it's a soft wood. Has nothing to do with the actual strength of the wood. I have a lot of Cotton wood trees around here (also called Alamo trees down south or so I've been told) that are all but impossible to burn. While the cotton woods are tougher wood the poplars when dried are good for quick heat or mixing with other wood that might not be as dry as I like. I'm not sure Cotton wood would burn if it were soaked in kerosene! I have a book titled "Trees of the Great Lakes Region" that we refer to as the tree bible. In it the author says the best fire is one made with different kinds of woods. JD

Yes, in fact the correct police would probably call these trees Trembling Aspen. And it makes fine firewood. I know people in other parts of the country talk it down as garbage wood, but it has heated homes here satisfactorily since settlement began. The dead wood can be a little light but if cut green, split and left to cure it makes as good firewood as any I could wish for. Most of what they cut here is water killed trees from the flooded areas. Go out on the ice in winter and cut the trees down.

"It is mot your Iphone fault" two typing bobos in that short sentence.
This whole thread got ridiculously off topic by the correct police.

Roger that! You won't be wondering why it's classified as hard wood any more.If you have to put a nail or screw through a well seasoned popple board it's best to drill first.
