burned down Monday, Rebuilt Thursday

I was talking to a neighbor who is Mennonite a few weeks ago, and he said the mow of his cousin's barn in PA burned down that Monday. He, being Mennonite, had no insurance. They had the barn rebuilt by Thursday and were milking in it. The burned hay was still smoldering in a pile a distance away from the newly built barn. Interesting to know how fast a fellow can recover when he has to.

There was a Mennonite barn that burned out east of town two years ago. Not a dairy barn, but a farm shop and tool shed and hay storage. That one caught fire about 4 on a Sunday afternoon. When I came home from the stock yard about 1 on Monday, they had all the smoldering hay pushed away and were setting poles. Next morning I went by there about 10:30,they had the rafters up and were nailing 2x4s on. I came back by at 2 and all the steel was on the sidewalls and most of it was on the roof. It was all back up in 48 hours from when the fire started.

We do not want to belong to an organization where we have to abide by the rules when it means helping a potential competitor. I hate to say it but most of us probably in secret enjoy it when a competitor has a major setback or worse is forced out of business. A couple of local farmers used to revel in not playing by the rules and taking advantage of other's misfortunes. Now they are sitting in a position where they are generally shunned by the community and they have run low if not out of people that will sell or rent land to them. Further, their reputations are tarnished enough that if they had to take on a side business it would fail because nobody would trust them.

Years ago. I came up on an Amish house on fire on the way to work. This was a Thursday morning. Friday morning the house was wiped clear. Monday morning and new house stood. complete. They were living in it already.

The repair shop that I use caught fire on Friday and on Saturday the local Amish had removed all of the roof and the burned timbers and the debris. They then replaced the roof after rebuilding the interior. Anyone going by on Sunday would not even known that the building had been on fire. Price of labor to the owner $00. The Amish are just happy to have a repair shop near them that they all donated their time.

Recovery can be fast but don't forget pole
buildings go up fast and i know the amish
fudge as many rules as they can. They also
have insurance to get government loans its a
requirement but they also fudge that by
having there own. We had an amish neighbor
who lost his house in a fire joke was they
had the lumber ordered before the fire was
out. But they had no fire investigation
where other fires would have been done and
they didn't bother with permits as most
people would have to they also used a lot of
child labour which the average builder
couldn't and ignored any osha rules and
regulations.

I live next door and worked with them until i got feed up with there cheating. I've always said just because a person goes to church on Sunday doesn't mean they will let that interfere on Monday.

I know some of what you say but the part about Amish lighting I don't go for. I also lived in amongst them for 25 years. I do know a lot about there dodging church issues on Monday

I do not want to tar and feather the Amish and Mennonites who uphold the principles of their faiths but there are plenty of dirtbags in each community that do no such thing in their daily lives. They have their kids work very many hours and some at very young ages. Things that would invite the county social services to rain down on us. One time I asked the Amish up the road from us for help around the farm one day and they were going to send down a girl who was barely ten years old to do heavy labor. She was physically slight to boot so I said "No thanks" due to both age and ability.

If hes talking about the one in lancaster county pa, then yes. He is correct. It was a stone bank barn. I all the roof and upper framing was lost to fire. The stone ends were ok, and I think the floor and down was ok. They did in fact have it up and under roof in I think 4 days. Local place here will cut metal roofing and siding the same day. They have trusses in stock...Things go fast with 20 or 30 men that know what they are doing..
