OT (musket id)

Posting a picture here will get the most views and chance of success. If there are any marks or manufacturer info stamped into it that helps dramatically. If it is Percussion, or flintlock, and has no markings at all, it is likely to be hand made by one the small gun shops in the late 1700s to mid 1800s. Some of these can be very dangerous to fire, while others are operational. A bore and chamber evaluation by a professional gun smith is always needed prior to loading and firing a unknown firearm. Even more modern pieces with cartridges can be dangerous. A 45-70 trap door Springfield is black powder. The cartridge is often reloaded for modern rifles. Be safe. Jim

no plans to shoot it. it has a date of 1779 on barrel and lock plate and name of LODER. (I think) also has bayonet stud. was most likely a flintlock converted to C&B.

Looks to be English and the date may be correct but if it was converted to a percussion cap it was probably done in the mid 1800's Would make a nice wall hanger and I'm glad you have no intention of shooting it!

The distinctive Cartouche on the lock and barrel are certain to be recognizable. I did some research and the Loder name seems likely to be British. The forestock is also pretty unique. It is a very nice piece and I hope someone can ID the maker and origin. Jim

Most states have muzzleloading associations. If you could contact one of the members of that assoc. They could either identify it themselves or steer you to a gunsmith who specializes in antique muzzleloaders. can't add much over what has already been said. 1779 would indicate it was a flintlock and has been converted to caplock. many of those old guns were routinely hung over the mantle charged and ready to fire as a matter of course, so be careful.

Check out this web site. I think it will help.
