Serial number question

I'm going to be putting parts from 2 different 1030 cases together soon, and while driving today a question popped into my head. I'll be using the engine and all the sheet metal from the first one I bought which is a late 68 model year, and the rear end/trany and rear tires from the early 67 model year one. There are some differences between the two. I haven't decided which front axle to use yet since they are different, one is the regular one and the other is the set back one which makes a shorter wheel base.

So my question is, which serial number should go with the tractor? Is there a propper way to decide this? What do serious collectors do about this?

just put them both on, lol, let the serious detectives figure it out. Then you can tell them whats what. Can't save them all, need the parts from the ones we can't to save the ones we can. gobble

Where is the serial number plate located on that tractor? Why not make it the serial number for the tractor with that original serial number location? If they changed serial number location between the model years use both of them.

If it was an AC, there wouldn't be much choice. Tractor serial number was typically stamped into the housing. So it would be the drive train, not the engine. Engines had their own serial number, but AC didn't use that with reference to serial number breaks/changes.

Jon, I would use the serial number tag that matches the front axle you use. 1031 tag for the long wheel base, 1032 tag, short wheel base.
I have also started keeping folders in the shop with all bills for parts, and a disc with pics of the rebuilds. When I'm gone the folders will go with the tractors.

I am going to keep records of everything with receipts. The problem with using the 1032 tag is it won't match the newer engine with spin on filters or the rear row crop fenders that I will use either way. Now if I use the row crop front and newer tag then most everything will match that is visible.

Put both on and any future owners would not be hunting for parts for it that would not match what it is. With both if engine parts were needed and the year of the back and serial did not match then there could be major problems finding the correct parts. Not a Case guy so don't know what problems mixing 2 years could do. Know what could be on others.
