Tried and True

Replaced brakes on a Case/ih 7240 and used the Anaerobic gskt/sealant recommended, both axle hsg's leak at planetary ring. Always before I used red silicone/RTV sealant, but thought I would update my ways. Will take the s0b apart again and do it the old way with the tried and true tomorrow, not real profitable job. About out of Budweiser, thanks for listening to my whining. lol

dwag I ve used a lot anarobic & had good luck with it. I clean with brake clean too. RB

Had surfaces clean and wiped off w/brake cleaner as you said. Had to be something I did to cause failure, prob wiggling axle hsg as I tightened mtg bolts breaking the sealant bead? My post was just "letting off steam" as tractor was to go home today. john

dwag not sure what to tell ya. I know I would be hot if it was me. Honestly I like the stuff.Wish I could help ya. Richard

Unused dowel holes in ring gear section at 6:00 and 10:00 on left hand side, 6:00 &10:00 RH side. I didn't place sealant around them but rather through them on axle & trans hsgs. Guess I've been lucky on prior jobs, glad I found leaks before putting hubs and duals back on, about 3 1/2 hrs per side.

That chit is only good for .060 are less gap. I think before RTV got better it was good for surfaces that were a machine fit. Now RTV is better in my opinion. The first time I seen a use for Anaerobic was on GM's 1.8 OHC cam housing to head (machine fit) in the late 80's early 90's. I applied it to the Harley outer chain housings to delete the gasket it worked great. If I were to use it again it would be on a good clean surface that would probably seal with out any kind of sealer as insurance. I thought it was the best pipe dope know to man at one time and it is on a used fitting but not a new fitting. It does make a good replacement of loc-tight if needed...

I don't like red RTV unless its used on exhaust then its high temp copper RTV...

Started using red RTV early 80's with no prob. Case's "jewel" was LokTite gasket eliminator which was nasty stuff especially on disassembly. On my re-work, cleaning off the anaerobic stuff wasn't as bad as G.Eliminator but similar. We used red RTV on belhousings and trans rear splits with the idea the stuff had some flex to it with no failures. The axle leaks were my screw up, but went back 2nd time with RTV. john
