Farmall A questions, High School Shop Project

Greetings,
I am a High School Shop teacher and have little to no experience with Farmall products. I grew up with JD, MF... We are currently working on a Farmall A and are getting close to starting the unit up after a lengthy re-build. Any help or guidance that could be offered on the following would be greatly appreciated.
- is the unit a positive or negative ground?
- where does the temp gauge go (there is only provision for an amp gauge in the dash)?
- The starter and generator were re-wired to 12v; can I add a resistor to the primary coil circuit instead of changing the coil to a 12v model?
Thanks so much!!!

I have been around Internationals / Farmalls all of my life. I am just
going to suggest you pre lube the engine with one of those pressure
tanks at around 15 pounds. The other guys will fill you in about the
gauges. Before you start 5he engine,,,pull all of the plugs out and
watch the pressure gauge. Give her a spin. Oil pressure should be at
40 pounds in just 3 or 4 seconds. Just being safe.

(reply to post at 09:25:57 03/07/17) Thanks Buddy,
We will definitely pre-lube Little Betsy before spinning her over.
It was at least two years ago that we re-built the engine.
Hope your day is going well and thanks for the response.

I assume you did use assy lube when you put the engine together so you dont need any pressure stuff before starting. Now is this a restoring project or just making an old tractor run. They were 6v pos gnd with a generator and cut-out for chargine system and then what did you do for wiring the system. Those engines had a sender on the lower outlet if you wanted a temp guage. The guage mounted on the gov housing. If you have an owners manual for that tractor there was a wiring dia showing how to wire it. So there are a lot of questions about the final project to be answered. I have restored several of them back to original and will be glad to work with you. 319-430-3907 call anytime

It was not equipped with a Temp gauge from the factory (probably optional in later years).
Prime the oil galleries by pumping engine oil into them with a pump oil can till it gets harder to pump. A small rubber hose works well.
Originally positive ground, but unless the new voltage reg says it is specific to one polarity, making it negative ground is fine. Polarize the gen by putting a flash of positive battery volts to the A terminal. It will spark, it needs to. put the neg coil terminal to the dist, and pos to ignition switch. Reverse the connections to the amp meter.
A ballast resistor from a 66 Chevy 6 cylinder impala will be fine. Jim A shop teacher teacher at SCSU MN.

Did you ever run across a teacher at SCSU named James Stinson? He was one of my college teachers in N Dak.
