My post the other day about the borrowed mag drill made me want my own. I looked at different sites and different brands. New name brand ones are higher than the moon. The Milwaukee in the first picture is $1800-$2000. The used Milwaukee in the second picture is on E-bay and is $375 + shipping. {I think Noah used it when he built the ark} The last one is also on E-bay-new $305.99 and free shipping The newer ones are -I think better because they have a longer stroke and you can use regular drill bits. I went to one site Hougen -made in USA and they warned you that all their serial numbers are recorded. Then you look on E-bay and a lot of them are in pawn shops! They don't really say they are but if you look at their other listings they sell Wrist watches, diamond rings, guitars and other stuff you see on the TV show pawn stars. I am leaning toward the new cheapie-MADE IN CHINA-but so is Milwaukee-------Tee

I bought a Milwaukee for work for about $1600 and it works great for the 1000 plus hooked we had to make in steel plate. With every bit we spent for it.

I don't know how often I would use it-not as much as you by far, but it would be a lot safer and handier than my Polish drill press I used in December. THANKS---Tee

I replied to this post earlier but it is gone. Anyway, I said how I had read somewhere that one guy bought a new (cheap) Chinese mag drill and replaced the cheap drill with a better one. He used the cheaper magnetic base and spindle though, which are the more expensive components.

Saw this one on Northern Tool. Don't know if US made.

Personally, for no more than I would use one, I would buy the used one.
IF, you can get a video from the seller showing it working.

I've got a Jancy I bought used. I don't use it everyday, but sure is handy when I need it. So far it's done everything I have ask of it.

The Milwaukee in the 1st photo is probably the most versatile unit. Those drill stands have almost 9" of vertical travel. They work good on a heavy plate for a bench top drill press. There are optional drill motors. I would be sure and get one with a 3/4" chuck. The larger chuck would allow you to use ordinary twist drills or Steel-Hawg annular cutters with the proper arbor. The Steel-Hawg cutters work great, but they are pricey and can't be resharpened. The other thing about the Millwaukee mag-drills, they are heavy.
The Hougen mag-drills are light and work good, but they are geared more toward structural steel work. Depending on the model, they are limited to 1"-3" of hole depth. The smaller models use either a 1" or 2" long cutter. The good thing about Hougen cutters, they can be resharpened. You can get a Jacobs style chuck kit for the Hougen drills, but with only 2" of travel, you're really limited on how much it will do. We repair and fabricate a wide range of equipment where I work, so we have both kinds. It is a significant investment. I don't think we have really ever had a defect with either brand. Most problems are operator error. Ron
