404 Deere engine value?

Yesterday I found two 105 Deere combines with 404 diesel engines setting in a fence row. He will consider selling the engines. They were drove to their present location but not ran in the last 20 years. What would be a reasonable price to offer him? I know that they will need rebuilt and I am sure the injection pumps need rebuilt as well. More than likely they are froze up from setting.I hate to offer to much only to tear them down and find bad blocks or rusted up crankshafts. They are in central Iowa. Thanks for any ideas. Tom

Maybe $100 each? Or maybe $100 for both. Setting outside for 20 years could easily have rendered both engines useless.

After 20 years of sitting outside, you are dealing with a complete unknown. As such, I would be VERY hesitant to offer any significant amount of money for them. You might find them full of water from rain, rusted beyond use inside, blocks or heads cracked from freezing, and the list goes on.
Personally, I would pass on them.

Even if you had to use two to make one, what would it be worth after a rebuild? $8000? $10,000? If they would even turn over,I'll bet Worthington would want $3000 for one of those as is.

I think I'd leave them there. If they were left in a fence row, it was probably for a reason. If you are looking to do something with them (engine or the whole combine), why not buy one that runs????

There may be some salvagable parts there- some unusual, like the oil filter assembly- but is it worth the hassle?

that is something you can make your own diagnosis on , or take a mechanic with you. the biggest bonus is so the exhaust pipe be covered and the fuel system have fuel to keep from rusting. try turning it over first by hand or with a bar. myself i like to lube the cyl's first think. it just needs a visual valuation on it. many times a combine is parked for other reasons than the engine. AND... you would get a better deal taking the whole combine . i would start at 500.00 per machine. i have seen many on adds , free just remove it.even saw a nice looking 660 case i believe it was... for 40.00 and get it gone.
i bought a low j. d. 60 from my nieghbour this summer , that i know sat out side for at least 30 years not running. tires all flat and rotten. did not take much to get it running. was not siezed either.

There should be a cover over the engine. The cover could have been removed or it sat with the cover open too.. The cover doesn't do much but it does keep the direct rain off the engine. The exhaust should not be vertical but rather at a slant a bit above horizontal unless someone rotated it up to vertical. If the exhaust is in the normal position WITH a muffler I doubt any rain water made it to the cylinders but condensation could still wreak it's havoc. I would pull the engine/radiator out as a unit and see what you have. That $100 figure sounds about right to me. Probably the reason they were parked was because of the combine itself, not the engine.

Buy both combines for $500 each if you can, they are nearby, and wouldn't be too terrible to load. Figure out if the engines are free first, that at least will give you some hope. If so, buy em, take the engines off, part out a little bit of the combine stuff if it isn't junk, then haul the rest to the scrapyard. I don't know how many Gleaner E's I bought for the engine for $400-650 . Sell the tires, sell the engine, keep whatever I want, haul the rest to the scrapyard.

IF the blocks still have anti-freeze in them then they should not be cracked. They would be worth a $250-400 as cores. I would open the drain plug/valve and see if they still have any anti-freeze in them.

I assume your wanting JD 404s to transplant into 4020 gas tractors????

Yes I want them for 4020's gasers and with several 4020's here on the farm I like having an extra one around. I was thinking about offering $400-650. I should check the blocks like you stated first. Thanks Tom

I bought an old tractor that had sat for 30 years new battery and clean fuel fired up and ran I ran it for 2 years before the crank broke so I' wouldn't be afraid to try and get em Running they were probably parked because even 20 Years ago a 105 was pretty ancient
