Carburetor Question

My tractor is a 1953 Ferguson TO30 and it has a Zenith Carb on it. I thought all these tractors came with the Marvel Schebler carb. Beside the point. The engine runs with the choke out and a touch of throttle but will instantly die choke in. Main and fuel jets have no effect on anything. I want to rebuild this carburetor. Is there only one Zenith carb that came on this tractor or did they only come with the Schebler carb and someone replaced the SC with this Zenith? Are Zenith rebuild kits generic to all Zenith carbs where ya get universal parts to pick and choose from or do ya get a kit for one particular Zenith carb. I'm a motorcycle guy and have rebuilt many carbs but each model cycle has a particular carb to itself. These tractors are wild cards it seems when it comes to carburetors. (carb still on the manifold but (is there a number on the body that identifies this particular carb? Thanks.

Before you rebuild the carb, make sure the problem isn't lack of fuel to the carb. Turn off the gas at the sediment bulb, remove bulb, turn gas back on- you should have a steady stream of gas coming out of the tank. If its just dripping, inlet is partially clogged and you're not getting enough gas.

The main difference I have seen in old
tractor carburetor is size. Some of
the larger ones do have accelerator
pumps in them. Kits are largely
interchangeable: provided bowl gasket
is correct size. Having said that: I
very seldom use a rebuild kit. If I do
not destroy the gasket on disassembly:
and if components are not damaged : a
good cleaning does the job. Sounds
like yours just needs a good cleaning.

Yes, some did come with Zenith carbs.

Sounds like the idle circuit is clogged. Idle fuel is drawn up through the main circuit, through a hole where the bowl attaches to the upper housing. You will see the hole where this happens when you get it apart. Once the fuel is drawn up, it is blended with air and metered through the tiny hole in the throttle bore just above the throttle plate.

Not sure about the Zenith, but on the MS carbs, the idle adjust screw meters the air bleed, not the fuel, so turning the screw in richens it, out leans it.

h, alright. So we have an air screw and not a fuel screw. Rule of thumb motorcycles is if the screw is between the air intake and the carb its a air screw. If on the fuel side of the carb it s fuel screw. Gotcha. This tractor sat outside for two years. Don'tknow why farmers do that but is what it is. Had the gas tank pressure washed too. Just working from the tank down the line through the carb. If I go to the trouble of taking the carb apart I'd like to have some new parts to install. Pulled jet screws and they look good (not blunted from bottoming out) Gave it a good shot of carb cleaner and reinstalled the screws. We'll see. And thank you

If and when you take the carb off to clean make sure that you take a tip cleaner and go through all the holes that you can see and then blow out with good air pressure.

As far as I know, the Z129 Continental used in the TO30 came with a MS when new. It is a 1 1/16" bore carb. Generic Zenith replacements with
a 1 1/8' bore were sometimes used to replace the OEM carb. Often a Zenith model Z1349. Kits are easy to get, like used on many Allis
Chalmers and Cockshut tractors.

Probably other posters have it covered, but I had a 2010 John Deere once that had same symptoms and it turned out the switch was bad. Put in new switch and it ran fine.
