speaking of trying to find help for jobs below...

I hired a great guy the other day, talked with him for a half hour. He said I'll always be early (was early to interview), work hard, etc. He was supposed to start Monday, never saw him, never got a call. Hired another guy Friday. Seemed good, he worked Monday. Called at 10am on Tuesday, 2 hours after work started. Said he decided to work nights at a factory. Ok, 0 for 2 this week. Hope some of my guys aren't sent back to their home country, I'd have to close up! I find the guys that I hire have received less and less real life work and experience from their parent(s) through the last 20 years. Still good ones out there, just seems harder to find them! Many come to me at 19 and it's the first job they have ever had to do. I mean anything. Never had to rake leaves, push a broom at home, wash a car, nothing.

Many of those same people will attempt factory work and quit first break. Factories here cannot keep labor. I just have to wonder, with all this talk about bringing jobs back and deporting Hispanics, who is going to do the work?

not interested in working when they are still under momma's skirt. i asked a young guy to check the air in the tires... he said i dont know how. this kid was finished school. i am sure i could do that by grade two.

That happens a fair amount where my husband works too. People begin work one day - then go to break or lunch... and never return!

I find it astonishing. No way I would ever just "up & quit". Had some jobs I didn't love when I was younger - but didn't walk away until I had been hired at a better place (and I have always given proper notice too - never wanted to burn any bridges that I might want/need to go back across).

Some people are crazy and/or lazy.

I work part time at a number of jobs in order to supplement the farm and I have found my coworkers quite good on average in that they are fairly dependable. Apparently that is not the case everywhere. Part of the job of business owner does involve complaining about the help, but generally where I have worked, I think the workforce is fairly good.

Something i was thinking about the other day. Working in a factory everything is provided for you tools, machines , the product to work on they even provide health insurance they set aside money when you get old and can't work even the toilet paper is provided. What this got me wondering is about supervisor and bosses and there ideas about the labour force. It almost seems to me that the caring and support young people needs is gone because why should you care about your fellow workers they can simply hire another one.
I noticed this where i work older workers or workers that are capable are pushed to do more while the lazy ones get the easiest jobs and the attitude is if you don't like it leave we well get someone to replace you. I know they are pushing me to unload trucks 500 boxes an hour how many at age 60 can unload and stack 500 bales an hour when i was younger i could but now its different and in the mean time people in there 30 's get jobs stocking shelves a lot easier.
When i farmed i hired everyone from there 80's to teenage kids i balance the work out tractor driving to the older ones hay bales to the younger ones it took mentoring in the case of the younger ones but all went on to succeed in life. Where is this mentoring done in the homes anymore does anyone do there chores?

A company here has done a complete remodel, all new building and equipment, they need something like 65 people. After the first open house, they had twenty people who did not come the next day for the walk thru and get fitted for their safety gear. Full benefits after 90 days, one week vacation after 90 days, paid insurance,BTW it is a union job to boot.

If the feds cut welfare and disability checks people will go back to work, its simple, the old biblical admonition to ''avoid the path of least resistance'' applies. It worked as recently as 1994, welfare to work, cut off the free checks and a large percentage will realize partys over, time to get a job.

I have hired a lot of people in the last couple years. I pay the going wage in the industry (it isn't great, but it is a lot above minimum wage and at the standard of the industry) and I treat the people with respect and consideration. This is manual labor, and the people are considered unskilled, although the best ones have a real knack for the job and do it with skill, talent, very few wasted motions, and almost no direct supervision.

I have dealt with a lot of personnel issues, drugs, booze, arrests and no-shows. 50% just disappear. Just seems to be the norm.

Sadly, the immigrants are far and away the most skilled and extremely reliable.

then on the other hand. ran my own buss.for 45 years and then just got feed up with all the rules and regs. from state and gov. so at 62 said to H with and retired well for me it did not work well just can't sit around and you can only fish for so long.went looking for something to do and everyone looks like you want to work? at 65 now i will work any 20 year old under the table. friend asked if i want to do his repair work for his biss. and said h yes he pay me well.most employers will not give older people a job because they are to old . still on Fire Dept and still do everything most young guys have no idea how to run eq.and can't clime an ladder. our work force is in sorry shape

Knew a guy many years ago who was retired from the Navy. He said he did a hitch during WW2, and when he got out, his dad got him a job with a construction company. Went to work the first day, they put him on a jackhammer. The water breaks got more and more frequent, and he said "by noon, I had decided I was not destined to be the construction king of Schenectedy." He went to his car "to get his lunch", he told the boss, but instead drove to the Navy recruiter and was in for 30 years.

That's a big problem in this country, the culture pretty much forbids kids working, they grow up doing nothing and when they become adults think they are suppose to live their life doing nothing.

Company I worked for, first two, weeks they gave the new guy the hardest, dirtiest job there. If the guy was still there after two weeks I guess they figured he would work out ok.
