John Deere 318 shutting off after running 10min P218G Onan

Hello looking for the ONAN GURU Billy Schafer if he could possibly help me out? This is my issue. My JD shuts down after 10mins of running and then it won't start up until after about an hour of cooling off. When is does shut off I have no spark on either side of cylinders. I replaced the condenser/capacitor and my coil no change. The only thing left is my ignition module. I did the ignition module check according to the manual and other online forms and what I get is when rotating the flywheel my meter fluctuates from 12vdc to 0.9034vdc in 1 revolution. In the manual it states that it should fluctuate between 12vdc to anywhere between 1to1.5vdc. What my meter is reading does that indicate that my ignition module is the problem?

When checking the ignition module, did you do it right after the stopped condition or after the cool down period? Probably want to do the test in both of those conditions to further hopefully isolate the problem.

I had the same problem with my Ingersoll 3016 with a 16 h.p. engine. I replaced the ignition module as well as the ignition switch itself. I also checked the coil and condenser and the voltage regulator. All of those proved to be working fine. So far the motor runs fine and does not shut off after running for over an hour. Sometimes the ignition switch gets old and breaks down internally. I had a Ford tractor that did that and replacing the ignition switch cured the problem. Electrical problems can be a pain to trace down. Check on the garden tractor site further down the page and ask Ken Combs about your problem. He knows a lot about Onan engines. Good Luck.

Thank you sir,I will try to contact Mr.Ken Combs. I guess changing the ignition switch is a lot easier to change than the ignition module I just hate throwing money at it and not being able to fix the problem. Thank you once again.

Yes, I will try again today to do the ignition module check once before it stalls on me because I can guarantee, that it will start all the time from a cold start but after running for about 10min it stalls and will not start until a good half our of cooling down. I will do the test before and after. Thank you very much!

I had a similar issue with mine several years ago and it was a coil problem. New coil was a little different for installation, don't remember exactly as it has been a few years. Tractor has run fine since.

Had a 318 do the same thing years ago. Don't remember what engine but I replaced the ignition module and it fixed the problem. NOw, I'm not really what you would call "mechanically inclined", but I do remember that it wasn't very difficult.

does it have a low oil pressure shutdown ? Onan engine in my old genset did and would act similar to that. It was tired and after running short time oil got warmed up and pressure dropped low enough to shut it down.

Yes it does have a low oil pressure cut out but I live in a cold climate and even after running for those 10 min the oil or crank case doesn't get that hot to cause that problem. Maybe I'll check it out just in case I'm wrong. Thank you for your help.

Hi, so you had the same issues I'm having with my 318? What year was your 318? Did you also lose spark? And did you do all the checks to determine/pin point the cause of the problem to isolate it to the ignition module?

I do not know about the location of the ignition module on your particular engine,..but mine was up by the ignition switch itself. There were two wire leads off the module that were easy to trace down for re-connection. Both the ignition switch and the module were easy to replace.

Module is located under the flywheel, is basically the same principle as the Pertronix electronic ignition conversions sold for various retrofit applications, but this is a factory setup.

A little module that's triggered by the passing of a permanent magnet with a red and a black wire that go to the ignition coil.
