hello this is my 1st time trying this type of thing, i just bought a 1971 dave brown 990 , it has 3 shifting levers, and my manual only talks of 2, can any one help with how it should be shifted. and also how to adjust the clutch for the drive /shifting, there is not much pedal .
thank you

On a 3 stick 990, the one to the left and forward are the underdrive or "SLOW" gears. The next stick over is your High and Low. Third stick is the 1-2-3-R.

The underdrive(slow gears) shouldn't be used for "Heavy draft" uses, where all the power is going to the ground through the wheels. They come in very handy for uses like rototilling, tight maneuvering, hitching up, or backing wagons.

thank you so much, so for normal stuff making hay and such where should that lever be ?

For hay it wouldn't matter, just find a comfortable gear.

Also keep in mind it has a 2 speed PTO gear box. Low will give you 540 at 1800 engine rpms, high will give you 540 at about 1100,

do you know to adjust the clutch to give me a little more pedal for shifting and starting off?

Is it a 2 stage clutch, or single stage one?

You need and operators manual. It covers all this stuff.

That's good to know. My 4600 also has the 3 stick set up and I haven't had much luck finding info on that arrangement. My assumption was that it was an option for tilling as the Brits seem to have more PTO driven tillage equipment than over here. I typically run my third stick in HI and it seems comparable to other tractors' speeds.

On the later tractors they used the same underdrive, but only used 2 levers. On the later ones you push your "High-Low" stick to the left and forward to get "high/slow" and "Low/Slow.
