Looking at tractors

I would like some advice. I want a bigger tractor for tillage and hauling wagons on the road, and my budget is limited to about $12000, but preferably less. I need 85-100 HP. I am looking at a Case 970, haven't found out if it's powershift or mechanical, Massey 2675 with 24 speed, for $12900, White 2-105 for $9000 and a JD 3130 for $9000. I haven't seen any of them yet. The Case is local and is likely $5000 or less, I haven't asked him yet. Seeing the other tractors involves a 2 day road trip because I'm in Northern Ontario. (And a $600 or more trucking bill to get it home.) My "big" tractor now is a JD 2550 4wd. Please tell me about weak points and parts availability. Thank you in advance, Harv

I gave $9000 US for this 2-105 a year ago. Had around 4500 hours on it. Of course I'm an Oliver and White guy anyway, but I can't say anything against it. I've had a 2-135 and an Oliver 1850 for a long time and this one fills a big gap that I had between those. It's everything I hoped and expected it to be. Perkins engine,Oliver rear end. Most everything is easily available in the unlikely event that anything should go wrong.

3130 would be a bit underpowered, rated at 80 on a good day, and would not have a fa tory installed cab. The Case would be a good deal if a non power shift, but at 5000, there must be some issues with it. That leaves the white at 9000, sounds fair if the tractor is good, likely has a cab too. If the
Case and White were in similar condition, it would be a draw. Either would do the job well. Ben

Of the ones you named I would look the hardest at the White 2-105. The MF 2675 would be a HECK NO!!!! LOL That series of MF was nothing but trouble. The Case 970 is a fine tractor but the White 2-105 is just a smoother handling tractor. The Perkins motor in them are hard to beat. I am not sure how the road speed in the Case 970 would be but the white 2-105 is not a fast tractor on the road.

I would NOT go with the JD 3130 either. It is the same as a JD 2840 that sold in the US. They have a great motor. Just everything behind that can be trouble. The hydraulic system is complex and ties together. You have a hydraulic applied/operated PTO clutch, a hydraulic Hi-Lo shift, hydrostatic steering, and the normal hydraulic three point/SCV valves. So if anything goes wrong in all of these hydraulic components it effect all the others. The worst being the brakes going bad and filling the entire system with brake lining material. That can easily cost you thousands of dollars the get everything fixed.

I'm a Case guy but I'm with JD and rrlund on this one. I bought a Case 2090. Powershift, new 20.8x38 tires, and 500 hrs on a complete engine rebuild with all the paperwork to go with it. If I could find a White at that price I would be all over it. So I'm with the White first and the Case second.

Out of that list I sure hope the White is in good shape because as others have pointed out it likely by far the best choice.

Well only silly guys like me would buy the Massey, but the is quite a price tag on it, must be in immaculate condition, but you need to understand them to own it and like it, and I like them. That White should be good for you.

Thanks, guys. I will look at the Case first only because it's close to home, and If I don't like it or it's powershift I will go see the White, which is an 8 hour drive from me. Is it true I can't get powershift parts for the Case anymore and that they wear out quickly?

The Case 970 should have either a straight eight speed manual shift or what I would call a partial power shift. You have three power shift speeds forward and one reverse in four manual shift ranges. The partial power shift is a pretty rugged transmission and parts are readily available. You just do not want to run the PTO with the tractor setting and the power shift selector in reverse. It causes issues in the oil supply and can cause damage. Other than that little quirk the transmission is good one.
