o/t How would you guys do it?

Has anyone shipped something small like a motorcycle from Tennessee to Ontario? Any suggestions and ideas on price welcome, havent bought anything yet just trying to establish feasabilty and an idea on how expensive it might be.

I have a friend who ships motorcycles,(mostly Harleys)from Illinois to California,it usually runs about $500.00,I don't know about going through customs and different Country if it adds to price or not.Hope that helps you.

I live in Ontario and have had good and bad issues bringing in equipment from the US. Biggest problem is generally Canada Border Revenue Service. Even with perfect paperwork they tend to drag every regulation out of the woodwork. Anything brought into Ontario with an engine has to meet the criteria of both provincial and federal regulations. A friend of mine from Aberdeen tried to bring a BMW bike into Canada from Michigan to use for a holiday, but because he wasn't a Canadian and didn't reside here, he was turned back. If it was a rental he would have been fine apparently, but because he bought it, it was a no go. We don't have the same open border policy as the EU so border imports are better controlled.

Hi Bill, See the following website for Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA): http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/comm-eng.html#_s1
If the motorcycle is going to be plated and driven on the roads in Ontario then it will have to meet the Ontario motorcycle standards.
I know people that have bought motor vehicles in NY State and brought them back to Ontario. At the border they had to show a valid bill of sale with VIN number etc and the price will be converted to $CND then you will have pay 13% HST on that price. Now since you are a non-resident you may not have to pay the HST.
The CBSA folks will answer all your questions.

Hi Bill
Be careful the rules changed to get motorized self propelled stuff out of the USA into Canada in the last few years. The U.S paper work is a complete nightmare. If you buy anything with a motor including something like a lawn mower it all now has to be done.

My buddy did a tractor after this came in, the dealer wasn't to keen to do it again from what I was told! My buddy did lots of stuff before this and he quit as lots of smaller dealers don't want the bother dealing with it anymore. It's supposed to be even more difficult buying from a private seller off classified adds as they are not registered businesses to do the paperwork.

There is something like 72 hours border arrival notice required before it gets there so they can check everything before it leaves the country. if they don't like something with you the goods or paperwork they won't let it out and your done. This is for the guy that brought it bringing it in, A commercial shipper might have even more rules to follow now.
I can't think what the forms and procedures called off hand, but things changed so much I can't just go across and get my tractor parts now either without paperwork problems on the Canada side. Thats now classed as commercial here farmings not exempt anymore. You need to speak to customs both sides of the border and find this stuff out first, before even thinking shipping and buying.
