Farming In Sask.

This was an interesting documentary made in the early seventies showing co-op farming by a group of local farmers from my part of Sask.. I remember watching it on
tv back about 1974. Now it is available to view on the National Film Board site.

Thank you for posting this link. I found it interesting. I wonder how long their Coop made it??? I could not find any mention of it online. It looked like not enough younger blood in the coop to make it over time.

The passage of time has not been kind to this type of production Coop. I have do not know of any. The one fellow at the end talking about how either coops or corporate/money would be farming in the future. It has turned out to be money driven but not many non family corporations. The profits are not there for to many fingers in the pie.

I enjoyed this film as well. I belong to four Coop groups . The Sunderland Feed Coop, The Eastgen Breeders Coop, Gaye Lea milk processing coop , and Dairy Farmers of Ontario Which is a milk marketing Coop. All of the coops that I deal with are farmer run , with farmers sitting on the board of directors. These four coop I belong to are very different in that they are free standing business , and do not participate with day to day work on my farm , as in the film . The profitability of my farm is greatly enhanced by the success of these Coops. Two of these Coops pay out dividends on shares held annually , the feed and the processing coops. The ones that dislike the coop system the most , are people that want to compete against them , coops work very well for their members.
One thing I noticed in the film , almost every man smoked, now , very few smoke around here. I don't think I can name one dairy farmer that smokes anymore . Back in the 70's , it was the other way around . Bruce

Back in the day! I was impressed by the idea that people [farmers] would pool their resources and work together for the good of all. I am sure that it did not work for a very long period of time because of the inherent nature of people not to trust others for any length of time. It is sort of a big family where one member believes others are getting a bigger share than they are.

Noticed that the farmer remarked about the problem of just a few owning all of the land. He stated that it could lead to a revolution as it had in some other countries. I do not believe that will happen here, in the USA, but we do see the trend of bigger and bigger farms everyday. Unless they inherit a farm it will be next to impossible for a young person to acquire a suitable farm. I live in a remote rural area and already all of the farmland is in the hands of the BTO or the Amish. When I pass I am certain my land will become the property of some large farmer as few others could afford to buy it.

No, the Agri Pool is history. Of course all those in the original are retired or deceased now. I know it was a going concern for years but it eventually dissolved and the survivors went on their separate ways. Interesting to see how farming here has changed since that show was filmed in the early 70s. Now we have single farms that work 10,000 or more acres (with many employees. Mostly rented land.
