Fence Mowers

Been thinking about getting a fence mower something like below. Have no experience with them and it seems like there are several types. I have some road frontage I'd like to keep tidy and would sure like to spend less time mowing around fence posts. Does anybody use one or what would you recommend? - thanks

I think i would try the pull behind on an
atv . it looks like it would be tough to see
where its at behind the tires i like the
knife concept versus the string . thinking
of that it might explain why the highway
crews have got away from the extended behind
to more in front. A second question would be
that if you swing the tractor away from the
fence the mower would actually swing into
the fence .

Interesting mower, the deck looks shallow and no spindle bearings showing. What does it use for blades? What brand? Also looks like the pto shaft would do a lot of telescoping back and forth.

Farm Show has had some ideas about hyd driven units that are spring loaded, to swing back when hitting the post, then swing back into position. Can be mounted on a FEL arm for excellent visibility and height control.

Swisher mowers they have there own motor . Seen a used one on Craigslist a while back. I was thinking it would be light enough that it does have a spring but it would still slide out of the road

In the late 80's Yamaha made the Terrapro with a pto. I think it wouldn't turn well with no differential and extra weight on the back.

Beleive it or not many years ago I trash picked an old snapper rider.
Repaired the engine and raised the mower deck up really high and
rewelded the brackets. Even put a two gallon gas tank on it. Used to
mow almost all of the fence rows right up to the posts and wires. Then
just walk 5he fence rows with a string trimmer to finish. Take a good
part of a day but when done they stayed clean and clear for several
weeks.,

I would be real curious to know what you find out after you buy it and try it out. DR makes a PTO version too it uses heavy sting trimmer line
and only about 900 bucks. It could be a nice tool but not sure if I would use in enough.

Yes, jeffcat, an old Snapper rider is great for use like that. They are durable, and cheap and easy to repair if needed. I use one for fence line mowing around here and it gets alot done. For some people the fence situation may be different I suppose. Regardless. the Snapper is a cost-effective tool for some situations.

any pictures Jeffcat?
I'm trying to imagine what you described and my mental canvas is blank...
my aging parents have too much fenceline to take care of. I would really like to come up with something for them to use, make it easier.

I like his idea i wonder if a hydraulic
motor could be put on similar to a motor
driving a fertilizer auger . that would be
handy if placed on the front of a tractor.

I've been "Gonna Build" a fence mower for years. I need something that will cut brush up to 1/2-3/4 inch. I'm thinking a 10-12" circular saw blade on an arbor mounted on an arm about 5 foot long, powered by a gas engine. Spring loaded of course. Have a pic in my mind, just haven't got "a round toit".

Problem with that method is that the RU kills all the grass Then the weeds invade so you have weeds under thefence instead of grass. Usually thistle and tumbleweeds.

Mine kills all the weeds. I use a lot of electric fencing for my horses and once I spray I have 2 months before I need to spray again.

I had not seen one of these DR 3pt string mowers yet. Interesting. I wonder how long the string trimmer spool holds out.
