I didn't start texting until 4-5 years ago when a good repeat customer told me that I needed to and showed me how to do it on my flip phone. Another customer has on his voicemail message to follow up with a text if you need prompt response. I don't try to judge people's reasons for why they prefer texting, but I believe that I can get a message to someone with a text much less intrusively than by 'phone, so I am happy with that. I do believe that refusal to text just so that you can get your ornery old phart card punched for another year is being just plain full of pride and ARROGANCE.

I was also a texting hold out for several yrs. One thing I like about texting as far a business transactions are concerned is I have a copy of what is agreed to for future reference if needed. Also in poor signal area one can send/receive a text when a phone call can't be successfully completed.

I refused to even try texting with the old flip phone. A smart phone makes it easy, if you can past the fat-finger syndrome.

Well said! I was a holdout for some time and still don't like it but it's here so deal with it!

It's like backwards technology, we have voice communication now. But my son uses it so I am now. It seems most of the time with friends we text back and forth for an hour when 5 min. on the phone would have done it.

Sometimes you're in a place that it's to loud, or impolite to talk on the phone. Or you're not next to your phone constantly. I'll get a text saying dinner in 15 minutes from my phone on the workbench while I'm under the tractor, that I'll read when I get up, and send back i'll be in in 5 to my wife while she's cooking and has her hands full and can't answer the phone anyway. That way she knows the message was received.

I can read a text in the checkout line, where it may not be polite to talk on the phone while the person is ringing you up. I can send my kids a text while they're in school and they'll get it when they can, since you aren't allowed to use phones in class.

I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it definitely has cases where it makes life easier.

I just tell people I can receive texts but not send. On my phone each buttons operates three different letters so I'm not even going to try. I'm one of the few people around that has never texted anyone.

I truly do not like texting, BUT...
For short messages that are not time critical, it is handy. I have a GF that is addicted to texting. She has filled up my available texting memory in no time, so I have to keep erasing it. Many times I tell her that if she has so much to say, it would be much quicker than texting. "Triple tapping" on a flip phone is a pain in the neck.
I have a flip phone for several good reasons:
1) they are CHEAP. If I break it, lose it, or wear it out, it is easy to replace.
2) They are somewhat more durable than a "smart" phone.
3) They are much more comfortable to use as a phone. Say, there is a new idea... using a phone as a phone...

One other thing. While it may not be polite to talk on a phone in a checkout line or elsewhere, is it any better to have your nose buried in a phone wherever you go or whatever you do??? That becomes quite annoying as well. And while I am on the subject, texting while driving. That should be raised to a 3rd degree felony and carry a prison term along with heavy fines - even for a first offense!!

I suspect that I am the only person in my county who does not have a cell
phone. Don't think I need one.

I held out for a long time, but my grown kids all had smartphones and were texting back and forth, often with much hilarity involved, so Mrs. and I decided to get in on the fun. We got Iphone 5's for a penny apiece (with 2 year contract, of course), so now we're in the Fam group. Kind of sorry I held out for so long- its fun! Kids are better at this stuff than us, and they attach interesting stuff or videos, but we're getting the hang of it.

Even got my first "scam text" the other day- the American version of the Nigerian Prince scam- guy claimed to be a Marine going to Afghanistan, had no family so needed someone to ship his stuff and money to for safekeeping. Right.

I fought it for a while but finally gave in a few years ago, even my kids were glad I did. After doing so I think its one of the smartest things I've done in a while for allot of different reasons. Most have been mentioned here already.

Texting is definitely useful at times - and like with email... it can be a great way to convey a short message in a timely manner (and NOT have to play "phone-tag").

However, I do find it annoying when our two adult kids try to have a long conversation with me via text! So then I will text them and say, "Hey, just give me a quick call."

I do send and receive a text once in a while but it's a pain pushing a button three or four times for each letter. Each text also costs me extra money so it's avoided if
possible.

Now for what you call arrogance and pride & I call common sense. My kids are in to texting like you. My phone cost $100 and has worked fine for me for the last 5 years.
My kids go through at least one smart phone a year - app $600 each. They spend 2 & 1/2 times more than me each month for service. They will even sit here at Sunday dinner
with their phones to their noses until I point out how rude they are being. I have asked each one why they prefer texting over talking on their phone. Every time it was -
texts are faster and I can keep up without having to talk to someone I don't want to talk to. My reply is alway's the same also. If you don't like the person enough to
talk to them why bother communicating with them at all? Seems to me that most texts are an avoidance issue on the users part so I would be careful with those stones. JMO

Look at it this way too, I will not speak to my ex
wife, I will only text her, this way it is also
documented, and she can't make phony allegations
saying I text something I never did, it would really
stink not to be able to text, is have to resort to hand
written notes! Lol

I have a cell phone but it is only for if something happens on the road that I need help. It will go at times without using it a minute a month.

I too see the good in it. For short quick messages and in places where talking on the phone is not the best to do. And like the others said it will go through sometimes where a call will not.
I always said just think ole Alexander Graham Bell screaming from his grave. " I invented the phone so you could talk instead of use morse code on a telegraph" ! And yet here we all are tapping away at a phone or keyboard.
I have the old lady's old phone. It is one of those sliding face ones so you have a keyboard. I have to use a pen to tap in a text as my fingers won't work on it. Same with the touch screen my fingers don't work on it very well either. I hate it as you can't pick it up without bumping a button and something weird happening on it. Maybe one day I'll just get a plain flip phone ?

You can call it arrogance or being old fashioned,or whatever else you want, but it's just a time consuming activity that I'm not going to get in to. There's no reason for anybody to have the expectation that I can be reached at their convenience any time they want to reach me. I'm not the governor and nobody needs an answer from me "right now". That goes for texting or being a slave to a phone at all.

Texting can save a ton of time when you just need a quick answer to a quick question. It saves having to look up the number, make the call, wait for an answer (probably from a person that doesn't have time to answer), make your normal pleasantry's, ask the question, make your final salutations, and then hang up.

You can send a quick text, when the person has time they can reply. Now if you are needing to ask many questions or long explanations or something, then a call is best.

Anyone who can't see the benefits of that, are exactly as you described. The same ones were touting to all a few years ago that they would never have a computer. And now as you can see, the same ones are on here all the time. Humans are a funny lot - Bob

I've been called lots of names. Wifey calls me "Honey", "Sweetie", etc.
My friends call me "Hello", "Hi","Hows it going?", etc.

I am 80, I have few enemies because I have outlived most of the #$%^&*.

I don't text. I have a flip phone, I never make calls, it is in my vehicle in case I need to dial 911.

I was going to call a friend one time, I asked him if he wanted to know when I left the hdwe store. he said "No". Fine with me.

But now I am called ARROGANT!!!!!! Oh, "full of pride" also.

After my last cup of coffee I gotta look up what those words mean....maybe it is a new higher standard I need to work on.

Time for another cup.

I tend to agree. I don't own a smart phone and don't intend to. My wife has one and the person at the phone shop told her that he could give her a "better plan" if I too would buy a smart phone. I said no thanks. All I need is a phone, is a phone, is a phone - get the point?

My great grandfather fought getting electricity . My grandfather fought getting central heat . My dad fought and is fighting using Internet. I
was stubborn about getting a computer and then refused to switch to an iPad, but now that I have one I love it. I have not yet learned to text or
joined Facebook but it's probably down the road . Just technology to make our life easier. You can fight it, use it to your benefit, or
overindulge in it, it's your choice.

One grandmother wouldn't text or face book
until a grandson posted his new tattoo i
guess grandma took a dim view of tattoos

When my kids were younger, about 8, I said "kids text because theyre saying naughty things they don't want heard". Then my kids got older and got cars etc. I fought texting all they way. But, when youre at a noisy football game and need to get a message to your kid or your daughter is in an "awkward" situation and needs to get the word to you that she would like to be picked up, texting is great. I am a luddite in some ways. I'm 54 and fought tooth and nail to keep from using a computer, even at work. It cost me in the long run in promotions etc. That being said, I only have a 'slide' qwerty dumb phone and it suits me fine.

Seems to me most of the guys that hate texting are the same ones that when you call or stop by, you cant seem to get away from that dam old
farts. They just want to keep saying the same thing over and over. And when you get close to the door, they reel you back in with another
hour worth of useless talk. I am a busy guy and most times a yes or no works great for me. That is so many times often hard to get in
voice.

Also, I love texting. I feel I can choose to communicate when I have time and not need the salutations that keep you talking about nothing
just to be nice. A conversation can go on for days if needed. It can be hours between responses. And when that is fine, that is the tool
to use.....

I send picture texts quite often. This morning my son called wanting to know the numbers on a hydraulic hose I had in the shop so he could order fittings. I looked at the hose and didn't know which numbers to give him so I took a pic of all the numbers on the hose and sent the pic to him. He then forwarded the pic to the supplier. That supplier didn't carry fittings for Parker hose so I took a pic of the business card for another supplier and sent the pic to him so he would have all of the contact information for this other supplier on the screen of his phone. He was sitting at a hog site at some unknown location but I could get all the information he needed by sending a couple of picture texts.

I also send picture texts to landlords showing them the crops on their land.

On Wednesday I wrote a check to a farm supplier at my kitchen table. He took a picture of the check with his cell phone and texted the picture of the check to the home office to pay the bill. I kept the check I wrote for my records. It sure is a different world today.

I'm the last one in my family who does not have a smart phone to text people and I don't feel the need for it. Slowly punching in the letters on the old flip phone is time consuming and aggravating. I can talk on the phone while working, driving a tractor/combine but there is no way I can text. If I have to shut down the machine to answer a text, well I won't.
And people that text and drive in traffic, that is a special kind of illegal activity that really needs to be punished.

Well these days I'm the customer 95% of the time and I figure if a person won't take a few minutes to have a conversation about what they're selling I don't need their product. So I just take my $$$ and spend it with people/companies they do want to do business the way I want to conduct business.Over the years I've dealt quite a bit over the phone and can glean a whole lot
about a person in a 5-10 minute conversation.
