It looked just like the elevator I worked at for a year in 1970 in Michigan. Only we would load out maybe 9-10 box cars during wheat harvest. We didn't have a elevator to check the top of the grain leg, just a bunch of stairs to get up there. Every time I moved to a different bin I would run up and check the top and make sure I was hitting the right bin. I didn't have the feel on the lever below and didn't trust myself with it like the old guy that been their forever did. He was probably about 20 years younger than I am now.

It brought back allot of old memories. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for posting, when we drove across Canada in 1974 on our way to Alaska, the grain elevator was the first thing you saw as you approached a town.

Very true, and most towns had an elevator row of 4 or 5 wooden elevators. That one in the film is much like the ones I hauled to back when that was all we had. I was fortunate to live and work through those times. They are long gone now.

In the old days they kept a tractor handy for moving cars. I heard a story once how the tractor was tipped over when the boxcar rolled a little too far and pulled the tractor with it.
Later years they had a huge cable winch set in the ground to move the hopper cars. Not sure if I have any pictures of it.

That is a fantastic video, great sounds of the machinery. I'm sure he could run that place blindfolded, just by feel and sound.

What a great way of life. Smooth running IH grain truck, too!
