Years Ago Volrage Regulators

I enjoyed reading about the voltage regulators and it brought memories of mid '50s I would buy rebuilt regulators. They were painted and had new screws, They cost $3-$4 exchange. I wonder what all was done to them. Perhaps cleaning contacts and adjusting. I hear some would not accept cores that the cover had been removed. Anybody remember?

I also remember using the cut out part of old regulators for cut outs on old tractors. Money was hard then! I may still have some old regulators around and maybe a new one that was given to me.

No, I never had a chance to buy a rebuilt regulator, but speaking of hard money, I remember my uncle refusing to buy a starter for our "M" because $30 for a rebuilt starter he considered highway robbery. (about 1960) He hand cranked that thing for 5 years till he found a used starter at an auction for $3.

Yes, the constant trouble of regulators exposed to weather, dust , vibration. I was never more happy than when everything went to 3 ph rotating field generators with solid state cutouts and regulation.

30 bucks was some serious money back then, I remember someone mentioned how in the early 70s they bought a wrench set for $9.99 which was more than a days pay.

When I joined the Navy in 1962 I seem to remember making about $80.00 a month When I got out in 66 went to work for Hughes Aircraft for $3.00 an hour and thought I was doing well. Yep $30.00 back then was allot of money.

Yup, I am perpetually amazed at how much the value of a dollar has declined. At least it isn't as bad as some other countries. Zimbabewe comes to mind... in 1980, their dollar was equal to the USD. A dozen years later, a 100,000,000 (1 hundred million) note, would buy 3 eggs.
