OT--Refrigerator buying?

I am really frustrated and confused. Seems like all new refrigerators are about the same quality and even the close to 3K ones have a lot of bad reviews.
Can anyone give a positive review of one they recently purchased?

I see a lot of sources recommending the Samsung and LG refrigerators. Yet when I go to Lowes, I see more Samsung and LG refrigerators in the return aisle than the other brands that they sell. I've read lots of complaints about both Samsung and LG warranty service and repairs, as that work can only be done by their authorized dealers/service centers. People complain that getting parts takes a long, long time.

Have had a Maytag side-by-side 22 cu ft (MFI2269) for about 2 years now. No trouble so far. Paid something like $1700. Not the same Maytag of years ago, this one made by Whirlpool. Assembled in US they claim.

Stay away from the big box stores. Find a small, mom and pop type of store that services what they sell. Ask about refrigerators that are NOT computerized. I think those are still available.

A google search will verify the fact that Samsung parts are pretty much unavailable. We bought a Samsung dishwasher a few years back, and then read all that stuff on the web before I installed it. Took it back and installed a Bosch which has been bulletproff so far and the wife is more than happy with the way it works.

(quoted from post at 20:13:00 02/06/17)
Go to a scratch and dent place an pay as little as possible.
We have looked at a few. Some had small dent on front, others on side, which is not as noticeable as on front.
The discount is a whopping 5 to 10%

Factory ONE YEAR warranty has coverage for food loss EXCLUDED!
If you purchase an extended warranty, it takes over after factory warranty expires and then food is covered ? ?

It's been awhile since I bought a new refrig. I'm a fan of a side by sides,
with ice and water in the door. Don't think you get that with the freezer in
the bottom.

They just don't make things like they used too. I'm a fan of a 5 year extended
warranty. I've collected on Lowes extended warranties too and am pleased with
results. The price of a 5 year extended is about the same price as just a
service call. Parts are included in 5 year plan too.

I would recommend going to Lowes home page, search for refrigs. You can do a
side by side comparison of up to 4 refriges at a time. They also have many
reviews on their home page. I found the side by side and reviews very helpful
when I bought my last maytag dishwasher.

Keep in mind, a good chance some of the positive reviews were written my
manufacturer. Ignore the nit picky negative reviews too.

Only problem with reviews is they really don't cover a long period of time.

Hi, I know this is not a fridge but I bought a Maytag
range hooked it up etc. My wife tried to make
Yorkshire pudding with roast beef dinner. The oven
wouldn't get hot enough for the YP. The service
guy came, set parameters , it's fine now he said. No
change. Phoned maytag. They said too bad. It's
now in the garage with a blanket ove r it and the old
one is back in the house. NO MORE MAYTAG FOR
ME. Ed Will Oliver BC

good luck!!!

we got a Samsung with the dual upper doors and lower freezer. has been good so far and it's probably 3-4-5ish years old now.

only reason we went with samsung is due to the quality "feel" of the interior and features. All the others either seemed real cheap/chinsy or had odd shelving/layouts. the LG double door center gaskets seemed like a bad design.

it has a 10 year compressor "warranty" need to read fine print. haven't heard about the lack of parts as noted below.

I'd by a Bosch frig if i could have found someone that sold them.

keep the old fridges as long as you can.

Also be aware new refrigerators have more insulation than the older ones did. For the same size box you get less space inside. This can be an issue if your space for the refer is tight. Couple years ago we replaced our old one with a Whirlpool because it would fit the space but it is only about 75% as large inside as the old one.

I'm not convinced there is much difference in brands.

The more expensive ones just have more bells and whistles (and more to go wrong), no better quality.

I personally prefer freezer on bottom, just because cold air sinks.

I bought one in November, bought it at Sears Outlet store. Had some dents in the side that went against the wall, out of sight. Same warranty, about 25-50% off the show room price. I hauled it myself, saved $100. It does pay to dicker with them, just some casual conversation, and he kept coming up with more discounts. May have been just a sales pitch, but think I did OK.

Hint, they work on commission, they want to make a sale even if the company doesn't make any money!

We went refridgerator shopping last year.

Home depot and lowes were filled with "open box" or "return and repair" samsungs, so we decided to avoid them. They had to be coming back for a reason, right?

Went to the local sears hardware, which is also a scratch and dent/overstock shop. We picked up the largest french door fridge they had, normally $4k marked down to $1500. called a guy over and he said, before we even started, "if you buy the $400 4 year in home warranty, I'll knock the price down to $1100." So basically, included if you paid sticker price. Sold.

You can negotiate at most box stores, especially on big ticket items, and especially for scratch and dent.

Last fridge/freezer I "bought" was on the side of the road on garbage day. Upright all freezer Kenmore from sears. Took it home, defrost timer was bad. 15$ later great
freezer. Had it 5 years now.

A friend sell appliances at Lowes. He gets
no comission and not mich incentive to do
more than necessary.

I do not think the brand matters as much as buying it from someone that will service it, they all have issues.

I just sent Joe Gagnon (The Appliance Doctor) what brand of refrigerator to buy. I know there 3 basic kinds, top freezer, bottom freezer and side by side. Might be good to know which kind you want. Might make a difference in his answer...

This may mean nothing, but I just happened to wander into local Sears, found a DeWalt grinder scratch and dent brand new for $30, bought it, was talking to the appliances guy later. Have seen him in there for years. We got into a Made-In-America vs. China discussion. He said, and I have no idea if he's full of it or not, but he said the top of the line most expensive Kenmore appliances are Made In America, and excellent quality. I personally have no idea.

My local menards store has scratch and dent stuff all the time. There's a nice stainless side by side refrigerator there now that someone ran a forklift fork into. I see washers and dryers all the time with dents.Sometimes they have dents when they open the box,but the box has no damage.

Wrong time of year to buy one. We bought a new LG last year the week of Thanksgiving, the same fridge today is $800.00(Sunday ad) more. BTW, Home Depot has the best price between,Sears Menard's,Lowe's and the local guys I checked with.

I just bought a Frigidaire,side by
side. No real reason had decent reviews
and have had good luck with the
Frigidaire washer and dryer. Price was
inexpensive. Replaced a roper fridge
that was made by whirlpool. It quit
cooling, going to order part online and
see if it will go again.

The one I recently purchased was bought new in 1988.
So, next year is its 30th birthday?

It is an INGLIS Royale 18 cubic foot with top freezer.
It was plugged in in 1988, and has been running steady and trouble free ever since.

Don't know if INGLIS is still around though.
Fridges were likely built to last in those days.

If I needed to buy a new one, I certainly would seek out that brand again.
(Bought in Canada)

Are you buying for you or for SWMBO?

If a single man, one doesn't have to lay out too much cash for a "beverage fridge".

If married, you might as well pay the SET tax and let her pick it and deal with the potential $$$ consequences, IMHO.

Dunno WHAT happened that a "fridge" now potentially costs three grand????

50 years ago about a week before we were to get married went to Sears and bought a Kenmore washer and dryer. As I started to write out the check the salesman said you should buy the extended warranty with it. I stopped and started to put my check book back in my pocket. I said you just told me they are not a very good machine if I have to buy the extended warranty. Take about a salesman back pedaling. We had them both over 25 years.

(quoted from post at 05:32:08 02/07/17) I don't like to bend over that much. I still like my side by sides.

Isn't the bottom half of each side of a side by side under the top half?

(quoted from post at 07:27:10 02/07/17) bought a new one from sears, their top of the line side by side many years ago still going

Many years ago? Go back enough years, and ALL of them were good. 20 years ago when we moved into this house, I bought a brand new Amana. Never had a speck of trouble with it. It just sets there and does what it is supposed to do. In more recent years, the Amana name has become something to avoid.

I buy the cheapest 18 ft, top freezer I can find $425) use it for 30 years or so and tossit. LOL current model is just 5 years old. 25 cents per day so far.

We bought an Amana Dutch door bottom freezer with ice/water in the top door. Got it from a Whirlpool employee who won it at the company picnic, but could not fit it in their kitchen. About half price. Living in the area of the headquarters of the world's largest appliance manufacturer has it's benefits.

Have had one service call for a burned relay I could not find/diagnose on my own. Also replaced the water tank that supplies the door, required removal of the complete refrigerator compartment. And the main computer board. But, not sure it is any worse than any other. We have soured on most products from Whirlpool, unfortunately. We have enough friends employed there that we would like to support them, they are good community partners. But, quality is more important.

As to saving the old fridge, our electric utility is paying $30 and will haul it away for you if it still works...

Oh, yeah. My Mom still has the Crosley refrigerator that came (used) with the house she and Dad bought in 1962, running in the basement. I just looked them up, still making appliances, sold by mostly independent stores.

I picked up a Samsung brand new in 2007. It still looked really nice at the recyclers a few years back ('12). I got to know the local repairmen real
well. Warranty ran out, two more service calls and that was it. I bought an LG. No problems yet (knocking wood as we speak). Aaron
