Halftime Entertainment of Years Past

Don't much care about halftime entertainment at superbowls. But what the heck was that? When I'm sitting there with my family and see crap like last night, I have to wonder how worse it will get. Looked to me like angry street gangs led by an ugly blond who couldn't carry a tune. Really pathetic!

What were some of good ones in previous years? I can't remember a decent halftime 'show' it has been so long.

I was impressed by the 300 drones in the background. Really clever way to do what they did I think.

Each light is a drone:

I am not a fan of hers and with all the hipe, I expected her to be running her mouth about political issues. Gotta give her credit for just doing the show, keeping her mouth shut and not showing off any private body parts. Jeff remarked: Never saw a woman who spent so much time and money making herself look ugly.

However, I expect she makes more money in one year than I have made in my lifetime. It seems to be working for her. How come being ugly ain't working for me and making me rich???? Lol!

Actually, IMHO this was one of the best shows in years and years.

I mean, it is a 10-12 minute 'concert', how much can you do? Any stage or special effects need to come and go in less than 30 minutes total....

Some of us old foggies might be fine with an old person coming out and singing 4 songs on a simple stage and walking off again.

But for what it is and what it's hyped to be, this was a good one. I haven't watched gaga's career since the meat dress era, but she was
respectful and did her show to her fans and did it well.

Can't ask for more than that.

I thought Paul Mcarthy's show was poor years ago, several in the past tried to do too much with an act in between the main act (in a 12 minute
show? Yikes.) and so on.

This one had some spectacular with the drones and the high wire act, some singing of her top popular stuff, and a little patriotism to start it out,
she kept her clothes on which is a little different for her, no politics was brought up in any far slant to either side.

That's a win in my book for what it is. I may or may not like her music, but as a show she did what she does well.

Staring out her career her goal was to do shocking crap to get noticed. She is a smart gal, when given a very short event to showcase herself in
front of a very large audience, her 'shock' was to to it straight up, nothing goofy. Well played!

Different strokes for different folks. Some people like a bunch of old guys standing around playing instruments (i.e. McCartney, The Who, Tom Petty, etc.) and others like the flashy stage shows (i.e. Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Gaga, etc.). Can't please everyone.

Lots of guys here have no use for professional sports.

It wasn't Bing Crosby or Lawrence Welk, but it wasn't bad either. I was really impressed by how beautifully Lady Gaga sang those first few patriotic songs. I think I'd like to hear her sing on one of the Fourth of July TV programs, like "A Capital Fourth".

Nope, was watching the right one (not the Puppy Bowl, which may have had a better show LOL). If that is a preview of H3LL, I sure don't want to go there ... flames shooting up, people jumping around like robots, contorted, bad music -- like a bad dream. Scary. :D

I tuned in only to watch the halftime show. I thought Lady Gaga put on a pretty good show. Very entertaining. I didn't watch the game because of the cheating rep of one the teams.

not really a fan of hers, not my type of music, but thought it was ok & pretty entertaining
better than a lot the last few years, guess we gotta admit that bing Crosby & frank Sinatra are not coming back to do it, gotta move on ! liked the half time better than the game , sorry, but just can't get excited to watch a bunch of over paid bums get put on a pedestal
will be interesting to see how many of the black NE players go to the white house to meet the racist president pretty sure fame & money will win out

I would not watch celebrity-status grown men play with a ball even if it was in my back yard. I DID tune in just for the half-time show. Lady Gaga is weird but
has one heck of a voice. I was expecting the typical abundant political rant from her and she did NOT do it. I say good for her. Not my kind of entertainment
- but she did one HECK of job. It was fun just to see that kind of talent at work. I also liked her opening song.

Sorry for the multiple posts. The forum software kept telling me my post was somehow improper and could not be put up. So I was going nuts trying to figure
out what word was causing the problem. I still do not know since now - they are all posted?

Think she sang some patriotic songs, never missed a note, ran up a ladder while singing, played piano while singing, jumped all over the place with a safety wire attached successfully. She did not issue political statements. She was asked or did a record with a master of old standard songs tony Bennett. Guessing she got a few dollars for appearing in a TV performance seen by millions of people. She has some talent even to be asked to appear on a show of that magnitude. Probably made more money in 20 minutes than we will make in 5-10 years working.

Supposedly, Lady Gaga was paid nothing. It was "free advertising" for her product in front of millions of people. I suspect there were an awful lot of practice hours that led up to that half-time show. The actual expenses to make that show were supposed to be around $10 million. She did a great job and I am sure the positive feedback from what she did will be worth more then I will make in a lifetime.

I just watched the clip that was on the news this morning. My impressions was of a deranged gorilla gone berserk on the stage, making all kinds of loud noises that were unintelligible. People pay money to watch that? How could we have sunk so low?

I think it was last year, the entertainer made it a political statement. I was just plain angry at that.

Lady GaGa did not make her opportunity a political statement, if anything her statement was one of unity and patriotism. So as to not repeat I agree with all the positive statements below. Half way through I said to my wife, how can she do all that, and sing so great, and not seem out of breadth.

A couple of years ago she was on American Idol. Her role there was to coach the contestants on the show. It gave a, rare for me, insight into her caring personality. She was so helpful to the contestants. She pretty much peaked out my respect scale.

Yes, I couldn't get over the drone thing either, that was fabulous. The technology and programing it took to do that is mind boggling. And that was just one small part, I don't think many people realized what that was. I know my wife didn't, nor did I until drones was mentioned, then it clicked.

Lady GaGa's costumes may seem a little over the top but that is her trademark. I now look forward to seeing what she comes up with next. I knew this show would be good. There was a lot going on, its the kind of show it would be good to see again and again to absorb it all.

Think about it, I believe you will appreciate it more.

Paul

I and the group I was in were very impressed. Great patriotic start and unifying message. Not my favorite music but not bad either. I appreciate talented performers. She and the other dancers were very, very talented in my opinion. I can't imagine learning all of those dance moves and then singing and playing at the same time. Costumes were pretty conservative for this day and age. Even said Hi to her Mon and Dad.

At least it was politically in good taste and not like some of those other self entitled "stars" that want to use the platform to express their views, like the one last year that was anti law enforcement. While I don't care for that style of music I do appreciate her not being negative politically.

I too was surprised she kept it neutral with no politics I could see ? I did not know those stars were drones. And I am amazed she can move like that and not seem out of breath !!!
I'd be out of breath just climbing the stairs to that stage.

The best entertainment at any sports event bar none, was Paul Harvey's "So God made a
farmer" used in a Dodge Ram commercial at half time. Ben

As far as I know, the halftime entertainment has never been bluegrass,so I'd have to say no,it's never been any good.

Couldn't have said it better. Why do we put up with this shock entertainment media garbage? Football is a tradition in America. We keep the game of football according to the rules. Why can't we maintain traditional family entertainment to go with it. Why doesn't the NFL get it? We need to demand better.

Half way through I said to my wife, how can she do all that, and sing so great, and not seem out of breadth.

There's this thing called Lip Synch, where the music was recorded earlier and now all the performer has to do is run around and pretend to sing.

You watch that boob tube and then complain
about the programming.
I'll tell ya something, in case you didn't
already know, your tv has an off button on
it. Try pressing it if you don't like
what's on.

If you think they didn't have all of that prerecorded you really don't understand how performances work. No way the NFL was going to let her hit a wrong note by accident in front of half a billion people.

I am not a fan of contemporary music, but I thought she did pretty well. Good singing (and I won't yield to anyone in judging that), good dancing without flashing any prohibited body parts, and a good show. Lets face it, geezers- we're just not in the mainstream anymore, just as our folks weren't when we were embracing rock and roll in the 50's and 60's and they were decrying the loss of Bing Crosby and Perry Como. Instead of "how could we have sunk so low", Dick, maybe we should ask "when did we get so old?" LOL

I would like to mariylin manson do next years half
time show, a little shock couldent hurt!!!! That
would start some $hit,

"you don't really understand how performances work" There were what are called "backing tracks" that were pre-recorded playing that don't have her voice on the track. She was doing live singing into her microphone on much of the show, with these backing tracks broadcasting. There were segments that had to be entirely prerecorded because of her location but only short segment where she jumped with safety wire attached. That jumping part was entirely pre-recorded video and sound on Friday before the SB. There was an estimated 113-114 million people watching on TV. Some media reports said her singing was flawless.

HA! - I agree Randy - What? Was there a football game recently? I'm 68 years old and I've never watched 10 consecutive minutes of a football game.

Amen, Coshoo. Being 68 years old myself, I couldn't stand Perry Como, with the exception of his "Magic Moments". I thought Lady GaGa did just fine; I'm wondering if some folks critical of her even watched? Her rendition of "God Bless America" and "This Land is Your Land", while too short in my opinion, were done pitch perfect.
