OT Diabetic cant handle dairy any more

I am diabetic and any time I have dairy
Prouducts my sugars skyrocket instantly
So i have gone to soy free almond milks ,
I miss the whole milk prouducts, when I
was kid I spent quite a bit of time on uncles
and grandfathers dairy farms with milk right
from bulk tank . None of family ever got
sick from it . So here in Wisconsin the sale
of raw milk is against the law ? But there must
be a way to obtain it , what about a prescription
from doctor? Are there any raw milk cheese
Prouducts in stores ? I see lots of organic
Dairy in stores all made from pastureized milkl
I have tried them and they spike my sugars.
So I ask ,is there any way I can buy raw milk
Prpuducts ? thanks in advance for all replies

I'm no scientist, but I don't see what pasteurization and homogenization would have to do with changing your blood sugar? I've drank milk all my life and milked cows for 33 years. I think people's systems change. Dairy products seem to give me gas the last few years, but I'm pretty sure it's me,not anything done in the processing.
Might want to talk to your doctor and ask if dairy products effect blood sugar instead of trying to change your source of milk.

When I became diabetic I found that dairy products made from whole milk did the same to me. I have gone to skim milk and cheeses made from skim milk and that has helped.

First of all you can buy raw milk from farmers in WI, it has to an on farm store, not sure you want to and if you did don't gorge yourself at first, your body needs time to adapt. Second I don't think the pasteurizing affects the sugar in the milk but I could be wrong!

Down here in Ohio you buy what they call a herd share. Then you can get fresh milk because you own a share of the cow that means that cow is part yours. So you are getting milk from your cow. But I agree with everybody else I don't think it is the pasteurization of the milk. I would check with my Dr first

Milk contains about the same amount of sugar as soft drink. The sugar is called lactose. Lactose molecule is made up of two simple sugar molecules with an ionic bond. People who can digest milk have an natural enzyme that breaks the ionic bond into glucose and galactose. When you buy lactose free milk it has simply been treated with a synthetic version of the enzyme to pre break the lactose molecule into glucose and galactose. Lactose free milk has a sweeter taste because we sense the simple sugars more than lactose. The sugar content and calories are the same in natural or lactose free. People who can't drink milk lack the enzyme and the lactose molecule doesn't digest correctly and makes methane gas in your intestines. As people age the they tend to make less and less of the enzyme and become more sensitive to dairy.

Probably more than you really wanted to know.

None of this has anything to do with pasteurized on not. Homogenized or not.

Diabetics often have "trigger" foods that can spike glucose readings. May be that milk is a trigger for you. Beans are supposed to be a good carb but not for me, along with anything made with white flour. I miss pasta and Italian bread.

I believe it will make no difference in your reaction between raw and pasteurized milk. The triggering impulse is not put into the product, nor is sugar. I also do not do milk, but am lactose intolerant. jim

As noted already, milk has a lot of sugar in it in a quickly absorbed form. Drinking a smaller amount of whole milk has less than skim simply as the fat displaces part of the liquid component but its still sugary. Even creams have fairly high sugar but the serving size is small so it rounds off to look very low.

Thats good advice BUT what the DR will tell you and what effects you may be very different. I went to classes with a dietian and most of the things she said were safe to eat will drive my blood sugar off the wall. Some friends of mine are also diabetic and I can eat things that they cannot. One thing I found for me is saurkraut. I have to be very careful when I eat that as it will cause my blood sugar to take a big drop causing low blood sugars. I use to be able to eat taters but anymore it causes my sugars to spike off the scale. The ladies at the VA worked with me one on one for several months until we got things figured out.

I am a diabetic too, I can drink about 4 ounces of milk and it doesn't effect my BG hardly at all. In Texas you also can't buy raw milk, But you can trade for it, we trade a local girl a sack of feed for two gallons. I believe all diabetics are slightly different, as potatoes make my BG go high, but cheese doesn't effect me much at all. You might also try Goats milk, I like it better than cows milk and we keep a couple of goats, but we don't always have one in milk. Just experiment with different foods and check your levels and make note of what is permissible and what is not. I know the struggle.

If the milk is pasturized it kills all of the
good and bad bacteria , same goes for
Honey , if it is raw its ok for diabetic to
Eat , but once its heated, honey is the same
as any other sugar, After reading the
replies it seems I am not the only diabetic
that has issue with dairy . I would like to
drink a quart of ice cold milk with my meal
I will look for shares in my area , thats good
Idea, If i can get some raw milk I can make
my own butter , yougart ect, will also try
to find goats milk , So is there any cheese
In the stores that is made from raw milk?

You can get it at Farm Country Cheese House in Coral Michigan. It's Amish, made from canned milk. They have a website. I don't know if they ship by mail or not. Check their site for a phone number, call them and see.

Milk, 3.5% nutrition facts shows 8g total fat, carb 13g all coming from sugar, and protein 8g. Fat plus the carbs are what gets you in trouble. Try skim. I don't like milk but use skim in the summer for dry ceral and eat oatmeal in the winter. Fat in ice cream, pizza, etc will drive your BS up. I eat at DQ and have a pint of DQ unstead of fries and do better. I only count carbs to judge how much insulin to take. A slice of Caseys pizza is like 3 breads, 45 carbs. If you want to lose weight, eat lots of whole fruit, not juices. Read the labels.

Diabetes is not an exact science. I woke up Wed am at 65, had some honey. Wife came in the hitchen and I was working around her trying to get my food. I forgot to pump my insulin. At noon, I was 452 and had a apointment with my endrocrinologist. He suggested going down to my lower basal rate and eat a light snack when I am moving grain or working hard. Yesterday I did the low rate after breakfast. I woke up at 81, 328 at noon, climbed 95' leg at 5pm, was 222 at supper, and 308 at bed time.If I rember, it does okay. I have to stay on the lower basal rate for an extra day because my metabolism is more active. If I did the same thing every day it would be much easier.

Good luck. I have been on insulin for almost 39 year and grain farmed.

I am in city of Racine by the lake, my
family comes from viroqua , la farge,
rising sun , thats where the grandparents
and uncles farms where at , I remember
going to cheese factory in rising sun with
my grandad , alot of my cousin still live
in that area , but its over 3 hour drive for
me

Why do you think raw milk will behave any different than pasteurized milk? Carbs is carbs. Doesn't matter whether the bugs are cooked or not. If you know there's something that sends your blood sugar through the roof every time you eat it, then don't eat it.

Raw milk contains enzymes that work with the digestive system, allowing assimilation and utilization of nutrients in the milk. The heat of pasteurization denatures (kills) these enzymes. The amylase and lactase enzymes are necessary for the proper digestion of milk sugars. Alkaline phosphatase is necessary for the assimilation of the calcium in milk. Total inactivity of the phosphatase enzyme is used as a test for successful pasteurization. Pasteurization assures milk is free of harmful bacteria while making the milk close to worthless for nutrition. Raw milk from a sanitary dairy is good food and safe to drink. You will have to get raw milk from a small operation. There is no way a huge dairy can maintain the cleanliness needed to allow safe consumption of its milk raw.
