Here's a couple pics of battery charger I'm slowly attacking. These diodes measure open in one direction and about 2 Meg in the opposite direction as measured on a Fluke 73 III multimeter ohms function. Multimeter's 9 V battery is new.

Century in St Louis area has parts, but shows only 4 diode replacement pack. Original "6 pack" no longer available.

When I want to test diodes like those I use a 12 volt light bulb and 12 volt car battery and test them that way. Hooked up one way the light should light up and the other way it should not light up. I have found meters many times do not give a good true reading

Ron, your Fluke meter should have a "diode" test setting. It should show somewhere around .500 to .750 (voltage drop) in the forward direction, and "inf" in the reverse direction. A standard ohms check won't tell you anything except if a diode is shorted.

The number of diodes has less to do with the capacity of the charger than the ratings of and cost of each diode. When they first made it, it was cheaper to use 6. Now it's cheaper to use 4 of a 50% higher amp rating. You can replace all the diodes on that plate with a couple stud mounted rectifiers like this that would never blow out: http://www.digikey.com/product-deta...es-division/VS-300U30A/VS-300U30AGI-ND/352844 but the cost is probably prohibitive.

Yes if he used altinator diodes you can get them + or - polarity. Correct? Just make sure the little arrow goes in the same directon . Every charger I have all of the diodes are discret components. Yes I always put in double or tripple the amp load and the voltage should be a couple of hundred volts. They have gotten so cheep it is mind boggling. Picture shows a nice old cutie I picked up for $5 at a yard sale. Took it apart and cleaned out a little dust and gave it a wax job. Shows the two little diodes on the back of the center tap transformer. Works great.
