US Highway 2

Just wondering if US highway 2 across the northern tier of states,
From the U.P. to Washington is a worthwhile summertime trip.
My Rand McNally map doesn't show that it is 2 lane or 4 lane.
Looks like about 2,000 miles from Mackinaw, MI to Everett, WA.
Thanks, Mike

It's 4-lane through ND, but parts are slickery'er than owl snot with ice right now!

Oh, yeah, you said "summer"!

PopinJohn, We made that trip from west to east in 2008 with an rv. Two lane at that time for the most part but decent hwy. We enjoyed the scenery and laid back atmosphere away from the interstate. Heading north from 2 in central Washington to Hwy 20 across the north western part of the state to I-5 is well worth your time.
Have a great trip and take your time if you can.
enjoy

2 lane through the UP. Goes through a lot of small towns. Views of Lake Michigan. Nice drive.

West MN and most if not all of ND it's double divided. Not a bad drive through that area at all.

Traveled from Troy Montana to Minnesota back in '94. Very scenic! Sometimes very lonely. I only had an AM radio and didn't get much reception.

Towns through Montana are located at intervals close enough to keep steam trains in wood/coal/water. The highline (what it is called) is a very nice drive and becomes more and more scenic as you go west. Culbertson, Havre, Shelby, Cutbank, The Izaak Walton Lodge in Essex, Kalispell, Libby, are all Largish small towns. Lived on it. Iron Horse Cafe In Havre. DO going to the sun road if it is open and you are in a single vehicle with brakes. Jim
Nice place to rest in the mountains

We drove the Deuce from The Bridge to Duluth as one of the first trips we took as newly weds. It was a chance to show my wife some of the places we spent winter time on snowmobiles, without her having to get cold. (That was back when she cold stand to be around me for more than a few minutes.) Beautiful trip on the Eastern end, I should look into making the full run one of these summers...

The stretch through the UP of MI is beautiful/scenic and it's been re-done and with lots of passing lanes and very smooth. Just enough small-medium towns to supply motels/eats/fuel etc. Some wide open , uncrowded sand beaches and if wind is right, some huge waves that will carry you quite a ways into shore if you're a mind to do that.

I have driven that route several times over the years, from central ND to Idaho where I got interstate to Seattle. All of ND is four lane divided highway, and probably more in other states. Nice scenic drive, only had trouble one time when I ate some bad shrimp in Libby, Mt. Spent the next hundred miles to Browning looking for a place to stop, outhouse, stump, tree or anything available. If you come thru ND, look me up and I will buy coffee or lunch, only a little way south of #2.

Lived near Grand Forks ND from 87 - 94. Highway 2 was a very good road back then. We only went as far west as Minot. East into Minnesota to Bemidji. Nice drive both ways.

Watch out for traffic near Grand Forks AFB though.
Was part of a team that moved a B52 to the front gate at the base. Had to tow it down highway 2. Did this in Dec of 1991.

Beautiful drive across Michigan's UP and on to Duluth. Be sure to see Bond falls in Michigan and the big steam engine in Duluth and Paul Bunyan in Bemidji, MN.

Excellent scenery. We have been from Duluth to Glacier Park then went up to Banff Park - Lake Louise then back down to Seattle. The Canadian Rockies are more buitiful than the US. We missed Vancouver Island. We took a ferry over to the point and had super vegetables and lodging there. The forests are out of the world. Over several trips, we have taken 101 from Seattle to San Diego.

Highway 2 comes right through Sandpoint Idaho (where I am), nice little town on a beautiful lake! Good drive on the Montana side as well.
