Just got back from the Feed Seed store...

They said they got this years seeds in yesterday. So I went today to get some seeds to grow for transplants.

Got there (Southern States) and they didn't have any Tomato seeds. They asked what I was looking for? I told them I was wanting sandwich tomato seeds for this year like Big Boy, Better Girl, Beefstake or Beefmaster. They said "We haven't gotton tomato seeds in yet, but I'll look them up for you".

He gets on the 'puter and looks them up. He turns to me and says "Those seeds are 69.99 per 1/4 ounce". I tell him that I had been coming here for years and buying those seeds for around $2.79 per 1/4 ounce packet. H just shook his head and said they are now close to $70 per packet.

About this time, the owner walks by and says "What's going on?". I tell him about the $70 for a 1/4 ounce of tomato seed. Owner says "That can't be right. I bet that's foe a 1/4 pound of seeds".

He, thens gets on the 'puter and says "Wow!, A quarter pond of these seeds is over $999.00!. I guess he was right, a quarter ounce of these seeds ia $69.99".

I told them that I'll just eat Rutgers on my sandwiches 'cause I got pouches of that seed at home. I just shook my head and walked out the door.

Got home and looked up Better Boy tomato seeds on the 'net and can get 300 seeds for $5.69.

Sumthin' ain't right.
 
My husband just showed me your note because I am a tomato lover and am in a bunch of groups that trade seeds. I have heirlooms. The price you put on line is because they sell bulk only and they are hybrid seeds. Go to the internet and look up Johnny's seeds they to sell bulk seeds but in small quantities. I don't have the ones you are asking for but I would be glad to send you some of what I have. I grow and save my own seeds as well and have over 300 variety of different heirlooms. Some I don't have a large quantity but if you want to send your address I will be glad to send you a variety of seeds. How much are you looking for? I have been doing this for years, and exchange seeds with top breeders in the Country and Internationally.

Sounds pricey but you're comparing 300 seeds to 1/4 ounce which doesn't mean too much to me. How do those two compare .... ie how many seeds in 1/4 ounce .... or what's the weight in ounces of 300 seeds?
 
rrlund/Kim- Thank you very much for your offer. I have already ordered some Big Boy seeds online.

It just blows my mind on the prices that they are asking for seeds.

Is this the thing to come for all seeds? (Not heirloom, of course).
 
She's got so many tomato seeds here,we could feed the world for 500 years after the apocalypse. I guess if they're worth that kind of money,she'd better find a safer place to store them. I think she spends $50 on postage every winter sending them off to the people she trades with.
 
rrlund- If you don't mind, could you ask her how long her tomato seeds keep? I found some packets in a zip-lock bag, that were stored in the deep freezer. They are dated 1998.

I know I can put some on a damp paper towel to see if they germinate but, I just would like to hear her opinion.
 
Kay, if you don't already know the song look on youtube for Molly Mason and Jay Ungar singing Homegrown Tomatoes.
 
They will last along time if kept in a zip lock bag. Some of the breeders I deal with are breeding seeds that are 20+ years old.
 
I know sometimes tomatoes grow voluntarily from the previous year's discarded tomatoes in the garden following a cold Ohio winter.

How many seeds were you hoping to get? Consulting our seed catalog tomatoes average 10,900 seeds per ounce. 1/4 ounce is 2,725 seeds.

We grow about 2 acres of tomatoes each year for fresh market, with about 15 different varieties. We plant about 2500 plants in the field. Pricing 1/4 ounce through our catalog, your price is a little high, but to be expected from a feed store. We get all our seeds from Logan-Zenner seeds in Pasco WA.

The average seed packet sold in a feed store contains 40-50 seeds. Maybe 100. Are you sure the packets you got in the past were full 1/4 ounce? I would be surprised if a feed store stocked 1/4 oz Tomato packets.

I got tired of buying seeds. I was spending almost $100 a year for garden seeds. I don't buy very many seeds anymore. I raise only heirloom tomatoes and save the seeds. After I remove them from the tomatoes, I put them in a jar with some water and ferment them to get them to separate from the pulp. I originally bought my tomato and pepper seeds from Sustainable Seed Company.
 
DFZ- Is there much of a difference between the weight of Rutgers
tomato seeds versus the weight of Big Boy tomato seeds?
 
I would be surprised if the # of seeds per ounce was more than 20% +/- of what I quoted as average seeds per ounce, Unless of course you are talking about pelleted seed.
I am not familiar at all with Rutgers but I have never seen a tomato seed that is that much larger or smaller than others that would make much difference in seeds/ounce.

Here is a question for those who save their seeds for replanting. After several growing seasons do you see a difference in your tomatoes ?? Back when my father raised potato's of a hybrid variety, they claimed the hybrid gene would fall apart as time went by resorting back to the original paring genes. The potatoes did get smaller and the taste changed as well after about 3yrs.
 
I would not want to plant that may for sure . Several farmers around me grow commercial tomatoes for red gold so I get all may canning and juice tomatoes from there fields. We only grow a few plants for use to eat. Also have a commercial pickle grower so no more of those in the garden. Green beans are no longer grown around here but the guy in charge of production still gives dad a bag of seed every year.
