JD 400 loader/2020 tractor engine

Hello All!
found this group as my friend's 1970 JD 400 loader motor died, and I started searching for options.
Seems injector knock led to damage in one cylinder- engine could be rebuilt, but first I put out ads locally looking for a diesel or gas engine for JD 400 loader or 2020 tractor.
Got a response from a fellow with a 1964 Dagenham/Ford 220: engine was rebuilt and has sat in his shop for years and he wants rid of it for cheap or free- looks like this engine is a 3.6 litre 4 cylinder; close to the 3.3 displacement of the original.
The motor is a bit of a drive to look at: first I'll measure overall dimensions and look at bolt pattern and output.
Apparently the Dagenhams were used in all kinds of trctors and equipment~ I'd never heard the name till today, though.

Anyone out there know of easy engine swaps into JD?
Thanks!

(quoted from post at 22:43:31 01/31/17) Better repair what you have, be a lot less headache in the long run than putting in a morphadite engine..

-I expect you're right, but [i:5a0d117a2f]just maybe[/i:5a0d117a2f] there's interchanges by design or fluke.

If it was my machine and if I had money I would get the complete overhaul kit from Yesterday's Tractors.

Welcome to YT
Ditto what Dieseltech stated. Frt axle housing bolts to front of factory engine plus I doubt you would easily locate a bellhousing to Ford engine adapter plate for JD

That tractor can be easily be adapted to a newer 219 or 239, and perhaps the 276. All had a block with all the same mounts. Those engines are common as dirt, and were built til at least 2003. I'd fix what
you have first, update to a newer Deere a close second, and only consider what you are thinking of last.

You might get by with an "in-frame" engine rebuild if the balancer shafts are still tight. You'd have to be crazy to skip that easy fix and try to adapt a non
Dubuque/Deere engine into there. It is a very easy wet-sleeve engine to repair.

Almost 100% possibility that this "Dagenham/Ford" will NOT be interchangeable. It's not worth the drive to even look at it unless you have the machine shop to do a conversion, and want to do a conversion.

That 220 Ford engine sounds like the engine used in a Fordson Super Major. I am sure
the owner would have no problem getting rid of it to a Fordson collector.

Good info on the 219 & 239 JD's- Thanks!
Another factor here is co$t- Canada is expensive, and YT won't ship here because of Canadian customs quirks-
1 cylinder and piston would cost $460 before taxes from local JD dealer, and I won't talk about head gasket, bearings, injectors and pump (yes IP is leaking badly)

A complete overhaul kit with 4 Pistons & liners, all gaskets and bearings etc is only $950 US- injection equipment extra
By the time one had it in hand here it could easily be more than $2000, for parts.

The few with money around here mostly have new Kubotas~

Find someone on the US side of the boarder and have the parts sent there and then go pick them up. Or see if some of the local dealers handle Tisco parts maybe they can order them. Or buy them off ebay ?
