I saw in the video that they were piling the wheat directly on the ground at one point.

Is this normal and why?
How much waste does this cause?

Did not grow up around crop farming. Cattle, hay and logging were the biggies where I grew up.

I've hardly ever had to pile grain on the ground but found there was very little loss as long as it was not left out too long or very wet
conditions. The big farmers here now use plastic bags. (Huge plastic bags!)
