This is my fist post on this form, I'm looking at a Case 2290 with 8 speed standard transmission that just quit pulling, but when you lock the rear diff. it will pull itself, What could the problem be? Any info are thoughts would be great.
Thanks. Mark

If one of the differential side gears has failed, the locking will allow the remaining side gear to power both sides. It
will not have differential action, but can be moved. When unlocked it (internally) acts like one wheel is on ice. A broken
bull gear to axle could do it. or a broken bull pinion drive from the side gear. These observations are based on guesses.
Operating it with broken internal parts can increase the cost of repair every time a piece wedges between two meshing
components. Jim

I currently have a 2290 in the shop. The mechanic told me they had a issue with the sun gear in the final drives. Turns out in
my case that wasn't the major issue but we are replacing the sun on both sides as they are showing signs.

The symptoms you describe tells me it is a issue beyond the differential. Likely the sun gear.

If you are intending to replace the tractor in a year or two you will likely be money ahead to do it now. Keep in mind I am not
following that advice but it would cost me more to replace the tractor and then I don't know what I am getting.

Thanks for giving some idea's on whats wrong with it, it's not my tractor yet i'm looking at buying it and those were the symptoms the tractor is having. Does anyone know how much a repair like this would cost, and anything else to look for on this model tractor, I grew up on a 1175 case and have always wanted a 2290 with a standard transmission in it. Thanks for any input. Mark

Case had a major upgrade in the differential of those models. If you ask on Case forum I am sure you will get your answer. I was involved a little in the upgrade program but never actually did one. Just got the particulars and that was in 1985.
