OT-Astronomical phenomenon or bad eyes?

I looked into the western sky this evening and beheld a bright object, which I assume is the planet Venus. However, it has a bright tail, a length of three to four times the diameter of the orb, hanging below. I initially attributed the oddity to my old and well-used eyes, which often provide me with double or ghost images. However, this seemed different, so I called my lady friend to look outside. She saw the same thing I did. I then called the TV station. The guy there told me that it is Venus, and that this phenomenon has been visible since December and is expected to remain into February. He said people have called the station asking if this was the Christmas Star. Strangely, the station has apparently made no effort to determine what produced this effect.

I?m in NW Louisiana. Just wondering if you guys see the same thing in other locations?

I noticed a blurring the other night. Interesting. Data on NASA.com and Google Venus with a comet tail Clear reasons. Jim

I am over here 120 miles north of Houston. Just went out and saw the same thing. It does seem to have a tail hanging down. It also appears to have a red light in the center. So it is not your eyes.

I just looked at it with binocs here just south of austin. I saw a red dot at about 11:00 and another about 5>00. Very distinct.

I haven't seen the comet tail for myself but heard about it. Basically when the solar wind from the sun dies down, the ionosphere, which is a layer of electrons and ions, in Venus's atmosphere can stretch out because the planet doesn't have a magnetic field. My basic understanding of it. Of course it never hurts to get your eyes checked.

its not Venus at least what I see as the very first thing that can be seen other than the Moon, still blue skies when this lights up bright,, a shot I took of it a couple nights ago it was brighter than the moon was then,,, I have a lot of pics of it and it just showed up a couple years ago,,, been star gazing for 50 years this thing is close

Did see it last night here in AZ because of clouds but I look most every night and haven't seen a tail. Ill have to look again tonight.
The red Star is Mars @ about 11:00 o'clock of Venus.

I watch Mars all the time what I am talking about is not that in a whole different part of the sky and I can still locate what I was taught in astronomy class Mars and Venus try taking a pic of one of them and see what you get lol
