piston to cyl. sleeve clearance

I am trying to find the official piston/sleeve clearance for a 1930 McCormick Deering 2236. we are rebuilding a NOS block and Sleeve set.

what clearance do you have?? a clearance of .0015 is kinda the standard in auto pistons. these are new u say so there cant be too much clearance, and these would be cast pistons. basically the harder an engine gets worked the more clearance is needed for the piston to grow. i would not be to concerned over the clearance , just as long as they are not too tight.after all its new parts, and they should have been fitted. they run with a lot of clearance when worn. and its only about 1100 rpm also. make sure the ring end gap is good. .004 for each inch of bore.

Not sure, it's my Brother-in-laws tractor and at the shop getting all things checked. Inserting cam bushings and checking line bore, inserting sleeves etc. The "old overhaul manual" shows the ring gap as "a gap of a well worn dime"!! And nothing on the piston clearance. Thanks for your info!!

Piston sleeve clearance listed for the F 20 is .004 to .005 The clearance for the F 30 is listed as .0055. That is far back as my book goes. It should be in the ball park.

that would sound right as i figured they would have more clearance than the aluminium pistons.

As far as I know, Alum expands more than cast and is normally 0.004" per inch of diameter. Thanks for your assistance!!

Thanks for all the assistance, we have set the clearance at 0.005" on the new block/sleeves and pistons!! Will advise if there is a problem!!

What is the bore dia. and what are your pistons made out of ? I can compare it to what works on the old JD's.
