Billy Shafer, resident generator guru. a generator question

I have a Generac model 6870-0 pto driven generator. It seems not to want to come up to full voltage unless I overspeed it, and there is a very noticeable flicker in the lights when using it. Took it to a dealer once to see if he could fix it, and he said he couldn't find anything wrong. This thing is close to 40 years old. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Thank you.

Tom

My PTO Generac 15KW is 50 plus years old. I had to replace the regulator in it a few years ago to fix problems like you mention. Modern generic regulators for these generators are easy to get and install.

Flight System Controls is where I got mine. I also got a regulator from them for my old Fairbanks Morse 17 KW set with a Continental engine from the late 50s.

I will see what I can find on that model. If it has brushes they may be sticking in the guides. Slip rings could be dirty.Clean them with some contact cleaner. Pull on the brushes to free them up. Contact cleaner to clean them. You can get electric motor cleaner at any auto store.

If it has a regulator. You might try turning the adjustment pot back and forth a little. This will clean the inside contacts. Should also have a pot called Damp pot. This is the one that stops unsteady voltage causing the flicker. If it has a remote voltage adjustment knob on the panel. Clean it also.

Generac is not very helpful with information. But I will check my files and make some calls.
