[b:fe9fda6793]My uncle 78 yr old has a approx 1949 8N for which he says he left key on and my have burned up points. We put new plugs into day grounded NO SPARK. Honestly it needs wire, points condensor the works. The distributor is front mount and I cant get in there with my big hands. Someone told me you could pull entire distributor out carefully and replace points set the , new cap etc and slide it back down on motor. Question#2 with no fire do you think coils bad of points just burnt up and help would be appreciated....Thanks Ricky In Western North Carolina :D [/b:fe9fda6793]

Scroll down and post on the 8N board, they have a flow chart that will point you in the right direction. And yes the only wasy to put in points is take the distributor out(it can only be installed one way the shaft is timed.) 1/2 inch wrench.

Likely fried the coil if the key was left on for any real time. 'N' Board will probly get the same answer. HTH

Distributor comes off with 2 5/16 bolts. It has an off set tang drive so it does not fit back on correctly other then one way but if you force it it can/will break. If the key was left on good chance both the coil and the points are fried and need to be replaced.

As mentioned, you can pull the dist with two bolts removed. this will allow you to also check the dist shaft bushing while it''s out, which is a common wear item that often affects point gap, thus spark timing, and voltage. The problem with this method is registration of the dist shaft upon install. I recommend getting a piece of paper, and make a diagram of the offset slotted drive as removed. note where the housing comes off, and where the offset ridge is when it''s removed from the engine. It must go back in the same way on the gear so that the offsets match.

If the dist won''t drop in fully, that''s an indication that the shaft is not registered properly. Once off, replace all the wear components, and check the shaft for play. If it needs a new bushing they are avail as well. You can also switch over to the Pertronix ignition plate which comes in either 12 or 6 volt models. No points. I would also replace the coil at the same time. Parts are readily avail from just 8n's at decent prices(no affiliation).'

Just make sure toy put the bolts back in same place that hods it on. Longer hits the timing gear and will tear that up.
