Another truck...

Hope nobody minds me posting about another truck here again, but a lot of you guys have had many trucks over the years and I'd love any and all advice again.

Found this '94 Silverado with 189,000 miles for $900. It's extended cab and 4x4. Not sure what engine, emailed the owner and haven't heard back, might call if it seems a good deal. Seem worth $900? I'd try to talk him down a bit of course, but even if this couldn't do much hauling, it would make a nice old 4x4, maybe still be able to tow a couple smaller tractors? Or just sell it for a little more if it doesn't work out? And then of course would have to repair that return line.

just got a 2003 chevy2500hd 6 leter auto, 200,000 miles for 3,000. I use it for feeding from farm to farm, 4 miles, not going to tag it. hope I dont get pulled over, was using a gator, truck is much faster

In my experience trucks that are that rusted are nothing but problems. Fix one thing and something else will go or fall apart. $900 is probably way too much.

Look over the entire frame. Here in Indiana I am starting to tell owners of those that come through my shop that the end is near. The frame rails are rotting out front, middle, or rear. The shock mounts are breaking off and the cross members are falling apart. One from Michigan could only be worse.

The other day I was in a welding shop watching them replace the rusted out frame hump over the rear axle on both sides on a 2000 Chevy. By the way the rest of the frame looked I would have taken it to the junk yard. I assume it was a half ton judging by the frame rail size. It turned me off to buying an older used Chevy here in Iowa. This one had a little over 200,000 miles on the clock.

I had a 2000 2500HD I bought new. Took the bed off in 2010 cause all the cross members were gone. Ground 1/4 inch of rust out of the frame before putting the flat bed on. If the DOT would have seen the spring shackles it would have been parked.

Good Luck.

I have had a 92 and a 98 both of mine I sold at 84000 miles and 120000 miles and did not have any frame problems, my one son had a 98 also with 165000 and no problem. now my youngest son just parked a 2000 model with 180000 and it has rusted cross member's, we fixed up a 07 34 ton this summer for him. we have nothing but chevy trucks between all of us in the family 7 total, all will depend on how it was maintained before you get it. but if taken care of should be a good truck.

On the subject, very vague inputs here but here goes. Sometime back GM went to a 3 part frame where the front was pressure formed tube filled with water and put in a forming press, the center section was C and the rear was boxed. Next thing you know Dodge had what looked to be the same thing.....and while I'm at it I pulled a brake part off a late model Dodge I had (brake drum or rotor forget which) and GM was stamped on it...bought the truck new from an authorized dealer. That tags 2 similarities between the two of the (once) big 3??????

My 2011 doesn't have that frame. Did rust have anything to do with it????

How do you know the truck Tracto-man is talking about has any rust? He has not said about any rust and picture to me does not show any. That return line could be a rubber line that is bad. Sounds like he is just wondering if a 23 year old truck is too high priced at $900, a lot of places that truck would be priced at over $2000, And wondering if the V8 engine is to small for loads he would like to pull. I don't know if they had more than one V8 in that year and they probably had a 6 cylinder.
