1938 John Deere B

In my John Deere manual it states that the number 1 stamped rod should be on the left side of the tractor. And the number 2 rod should be on the right side of the tractor. I assume the right side is as you are sitting on the tractor? The only reason I ask is when I went to remove the rods, the number 2 rod is on the left side of the tractor as you sit on it. The number 1 rod is on the right side as you sit on the tractor. Does it really matter which side 1 and 2 rods are on? How clean do the journal need to be to run the old tractors? Mine look a little rough appearance wise. I emery clothed the journals and they are smooth. There is visual marks or lines (not straight lines) in the journal but I cannot feel anything. Please advise of your thoughts? Thanks

It could have been switched during an overhaul or totally different rods. As long as they are adjusted correctly it does not matter.

Quote "How clean do the journal need to be to run the old tractors? ....There is visual marks or lines (not straight lines) in the journal but I cannot feel anything." -- I would suppose you are talking about discoloration from water/moisture from the crank and bearing setting in one position a long time. My experience has been as long as it is resonably smooth after you have used some 320 or finer emery tape on it it will be fine. Even minor rust pits would be acceptable IMHO in a slow speed 2 cyl. There might be some flaming coming on this one.

John Deeres really aren't that picky. We've had a few apart, and there are always surprises inside! Just get everything clean and tight, and put it back on there. When we tore into my Dad's GM, it had one rod with a bearing in it, and the rod was shims! Two different part numbers, from two different generations of tractors. Cleaned them both, and reinstalled! Runs JUST fine. ;)Bryce
