So what do ya think? I can get a 2017 kenworth with auto shift in black or a 2016 kenworth with 10spd manual in fire engine red. Haven't decided yet, but I can cut $5,000 off thee repair if I'm just going to trade it. Also the new trucks get 500,000 mile warrenty on all emissions.

Hello Jon. I drove KW for 20 yrs. You can't go wrong with ether one but I would prefer the 10 speed. And being red is just a plus. Steve

I think I can't help you on your dilemma, but bills like that is why after seven diesel pickups or so I just bought a brand new gasser. So far, so good. More power and burns less fuel than I thought. It doesn't help you any but you have my sympathies. Good luck, Sam

THANK YOU EPA. That is outragious. Had nothing to do with the mechanicals of the truck, just emissions.
What happended to the $3,000 quote you got????.
Jon, I guess I'm no longer the grim reaper as per our ph call.
Why can they knock $5,000 of the bill if you trade???? I think I would have my tire beater in hand and talk to the service and sales managers.
Go for the black K walker and put flame graphics all over it like the "Ghost Rider". Maybe you can slay the EPA devil.

Now I know why you felt like that squirrel! I don't know enough to tell you what to do but you sure have my sympathy. It seems like a fellow that is trying to work and do right gets kicked every time he turns the corner.

Jon I may have an idea that might help you! I got the idea when I read ACGs post. A company named Fitzgeralds is in my area that sells trucks that are emissions exempt. They buy what are called glider kits from Peterbilt and put non-emission engines in them. There phone number is 931-879-4881 or 931-752-2900. I don't know how it works but they are selling the dickens out of trucks. If I can help let me know.

The $5,000 savings is by not completing the repair, just get it running so I can get to Dallas for the new truck. The $3,000 was for the original repair that shut it down. When they got that done and were testing it the second repair came up.

Jon- I'm sorry for your dilemma, I assume from this you own your own tractor and haul for DART, not a company owned tractor?

No true advice from me, but I would think a whole day of shifting would wear me out now, maybe the auto thing wouldn't be so bad...

I feel for you guys. A friend from Willmar dumped 9k in his truck last month. He was stranded twice and did a fix of 2K and after the third time he spent 7K retrofitting the system to ensure no future failures. Of course that doesn't include his lost time.

I am driving a 2015 T680 with Pacar engine and auto shift. It has 136k on it. 22k by me. This week I am driving trainer around. His is identical. I like it but nothing to compare to. The auto shift is jerkier in his truck than mine when starting the load. The heater in mine has some control issues. Good luck making the choice. Sitting in Tyler Tx tonite with early delivery. Heading east and north tomorrow after Dallas.

Jon I would run for a Volvo that is out of warranty!!!! Engine issues are known to be bad news.

As for a new truck I would go with as simple as I could buy and that would not be an automatic. With the higher horsepower trucks these days you not shifting much anyway. Plus I hate backing into a dock that is up hill with an automatic. You get jumps and starts. It is hard to not slam the dock.

I will second skipping the Paccar engine. Several locals have had nothing but trouble out of them. The one fellow says he loves his when it is running but he will never own it out of warranty.

I have heard of them, and a friend who works for the local Detroit Diesel/Allison transmission distributor says the build a first class truck! I'm not a trucker, but if I were, I would definitely give them a call.

I am not an expert in trucks and I do not know your contractual obligations, but I would second the recommendation for a glider. My brother's company picked one up last year, the company warrants the rebuilt components (engine and tranny) the OEM warrants the other components. I suspect that the Feds will close this loophole pretty soon to eliminate the use of pre-emissions engines.

Good Luck
Rich

The problem with a glider is financing, I don't have enough down payment to get one. Just like with cars, new is easier to buy. Plus they are making it hard to use those more and more, you already can't take them into california and other states are talking about following.

that regeneration is why I don't want a truck newer then 2003 no egr valve either some of the guys with trucks newer are taking all of the emitions off I know you cant go into some states that's the biggest trouble with trucking now. if your going to work hard you need the warranty I kjnow a lot of money but any trouble and your down with outrages repair bills good luck oner op feed and grain fore 41 years. I know sometime ill learn lol still have 120 freightliner 2000, only 1127500 miles with 200 thousand on in frame,

Guy I worked with called red cars Write me up red ! As in they seem to get tickets more often.
