Tractor Oil Change?

I just change the engine oil in my kubota and it had about 300 hours since the last change. I was wondering how often do you change yours. Do you go by the hours or maybe once a year if you don't use it much.

It depends on the manufacturers recommendations,we change most @100 hrs but the new holland we bought new in 2014 specifically states 600 hr oil changes so we follow what the manufacturer states

I still run 100 hour change intervals regardless of the tractor - the JD 8430 gets serviced just the same as the 7800 or IH 886. Some tractors I put around 100 hours a year on, some 200, but oil is cheap and so is grease. I'm a big believer in greasing everything plenty. I also change hydraulic and fuel filters every 100 hours. Breakdowns are rare around here with that much service.

With the exception of the two newest pieces of farm equipment, everything we have specifies 100 hours for engine oil change. With that, I like to see everything get its oil change at least once per year, as there are not a great number of hours put on everything as there once was. With the higher quality oils and extended intervals offered, I am not quite so a strict about getting the oil changes done at that 100 hour mark. With relatively fresh engine overhauls or newer equipment with fewer hours, I do not see that 100 hour quite as rigid as I once had. If one tractor ends up with an additional 10 or 20 hours on the tach and I can change the oil at the end of the fall and put in a fresh oil change over winter, I will stretch that change out a little longer. I DO use, what I believe to be, high quality engine oils that allow for longer service intervals.

I used to do it every 100 hrs.Religiously. Now I just change once a year.Or twice (spring/fall) on a tractor that gets used all year.It hasnt seemed to hurt as the '7' has over 12000 hrs and the '12' has 20,000. Who knows how many the SM has....

I do between 70-100 hours, which is the time my oil turns black and engine start to burn it. Some engines last longer, but my test is black and just starts to burn. I figure at that point the oil is breaking down, time for a change.

All my cars and trucks oil turns black and breaks down at 3K miles. If your average speed is a slow 30 mph that's 100 hours.

What does Kubota recommend? You could adjust a little one way or another depending on conditions but usually the manufacturers recommendation is the best. We run our Subaru 6-7 thousand miles, but it's all highway and very few cold starts, and Mobil 1.

The newer tractors run cleaner so they have longer oil change intervals. You really need to look in your operators book and see what Kubota recommends. I change the older tractors like a JD 4020 every 100 hours. My JD 6400 every 200 hours. The newer JD 8330s call for 300 hour intervals but we go 200.

On the newer tractors the oil still looks clean at 100 hours.

Ford recommended 300 hours back in the 50s when oil was crap and full of parrafins, waxes, and boiled of the thinner companants and formed acids.

Modern hd oils dont have any off those problems. And if the manufacturer and oil companies both dont recommend 100 hour oil changes today.

I do every 500 hours or 5 years... the hd oils dont let acids form so longer intervals are ok. Modern hd oils start at extremely alkali at around 11.3 to 12.5 so acids from the moisture and sulfur are no longer an issue. Low sulfur fuels also even help more. If your worried, do oil analysis and then you can change your oil on perfect timing as the additives are depleted and soot and wear metals start to accumulate and the oil shows near 7 on the base/acid scale. Modern hd oils even have additives that keep the soot and other materials from clumping together so that they stay at a microscopic size and can not damage the engine.

If your not running an hd oil, then by all means change early and often as your engine is sludging up and dying anyway.
